LAND ROVER BURGHLEY HORSE TRIALS RECEIVE ENVIRONMENT AWARD

We are very pleased to announce that we have received a Silver Level Award for our environmental efforts and achievements by Investors in the Environment (iiE) - a not for profit environmental accreditation scheme GAS. Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials Event Director Elizabeth Inman says: "To have our environmental achievements recognised by receiving this Investors in the Environment Silver Award, has been really rewarding. It's very important to the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials that we do all we can to reduce the impact our business has on the environment. We joined the iiE scheme to show us what measures to put in place to do this and how to monitor our success." iiE was initially launched in 2010 by Peterborough Environment City Trust to help businesses in the city reduce their impact on the environment and help Peterborough strive for its Environment Capital mission. It has since expanded and now has members in Cambridgeshire (and parts of the East of England), Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire. The scheme also recently began an exciting new partnership with Yorkshire Energy Partnership that will cover all businesses in the North of the UK. The iiE scheme is unique because businesses must achieve a minimum two per cent improvement in resource efficiency over an agreed baseline figure to secure accreditation. Other essential criteria include having a recycling system in place, adopting a travel plan, taking a carbon footprint test and setting targets for carbon reduction, plus additional actions.

Situated in the magnificent parkland of Burghley House, Stamford, Lincolnshire, The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials (5-8 September 2013) is the most hotly-contested major horse trials in the autumn calendar. The competition starts with two days of dressage in the main arena on Thursday (and Friday), while Saturday is cross country day, when 80 horse and rider combinations will test their mettle around Burghley's famous course which is designed by Captain Mark Phillips. The competition comes to its climax with show jumping on Sunday to determine who will carry home the Land Rover Perpetual Challenge Trophy and the substantial prize fund. Burghley is more than just horses, it is acknowledged as one of the major British social occasions and is especially renowned for its shopping.
2012 SEIB RACEHORSE TO RIDING HORSE SHOW CHAMPIONSHIP - LAND ROVER BURGHLEY HORSE TRIALS

The main arena at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials was the venue for the final qualifier for the 2012 South Essex Insurance Brokers Racehorse to Riding Horse Championship. This is the first time the qualifier has been given a Sunday prime time slot at this world famous three day event. Reflecting this, the entries were of an exceptionally high standard, with 20 horses coming forward for judging in front of a packed crowd. Taking first place was Jill Wormall's, Sister Gee. Stevey's Lad, owned by Philip Kirby and Samantha Osborne took the other qualifying spot for The Horse of the Year Show finals, held at the NEC Birmingham in October. Class sponsors, SEIB and the team at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials have worked hard together to facilitate the staging of this qualifier in the main ring. Ride judges were Matthew Lawrence and Sara Leatherbarrow and David Walters judged conformation. They were all impressed with the standard of entries and the behaviour of the horses in the electric atmosphere of the main arena at Burghley. Sister Gee won the qualifier in fine style, this 10 year old bay mare by Desert Story out of a Saint Estephe mare was in training with Reg Hollinshead until just over a year ago, she was the last ever horse Reg bought at the sales. Owner and rider, Jill Wormall said, "she has won at several county shows this year, including Staffordshire, Shropshire and Newark and Notts. When she was in training she used to be ridden by anyone and everyone so she is very relaxed for the judges to ride. She has definitely won more showing than she did racing". Sister Gee was placed several times on the flat during her racing career. Jill has had great success in both showing and racing, she has won three times before at HOYS and ridden 45 racing winners. Taking runner up spot was, Stevey's Lad, a nine year old chestnut gelding by Rainwatch out of a Roselier mare. He is part owned by his ex-trainer, Philip Kirby, and ran a total of 12 times over hurdles and fences finishing third once. Stevey's Lad was in training until April this year when Samantha Osborne who rides out for Philip took him on to take part in some showing classes. Samantha said "we went to several local shows and he won every time. I then took him to the Racehorse to Riding Horse qualifier at Vale View last month, he was pulled in second but then was just a bit green with the ride judge and finished down the line. We have been practising hard since then and have had wins at Ponies UK and Borrowby in the meantime. He has been just brilliant today". Samantha is looking forward to a busy time at HOYS, she has also qualified Kirsty Harris' horse, Time Out, in the Hack and Large Intermediate Show Riding Type classes. Samantha is sponsored by Prestige Browbands. Nicolina Mackenzie, Marketing Manager at SEIB said "I am thrilled at how well the qualifier went. The horses were beautifully behaved with all the razzmatazz of the main ring and what a thrill for the riders to compete in this wonderful setting. The team at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials have worked so hard toward making this move from ring two to the main arena such a success. We have some very high quality horses qualified for the 2012 HOYS Championship". Equine Insurance brokers, South Essex Insurance Brokers provide cover for horses, horse boxes, yards and much more. 2012 has seen some significant changes in the SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse Championship as the HOYS Champion will for the first time this year go forward for the HOYS Supreme Horse Championship. The SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse Show Championship qualifiers are open to any owner, rider and producer. The Racehorse to Riding Horse Show Championship, which is supported by the charity, Retraining of Racehorses, was initiated by South Essex Insurance Brokers (SEIB) to help ex racehorses when they come out of training and help to recognise their abilities in the show ring. Horses need to have been in training with a recognised trainer and have raced to be eligible for these classes, which provide an opportunity to qualify for the prestigious HOYS finals. The South Essex Insurance Brokers Racehorse to Riding Horse Championship finals will be held at the Horse Of The Year Show, 3rd - 7th October 2012, at NEC, Birmingham. The winner of the Championship will go forward to the Supreme Horse of the Year judging on Sunday evening at HOYS for the first time this year.

ANDREW AND AVEBURY CLAIM THE LAND ROVER TROPHY

New Zealander Andrew Nicholson went one better than last year to win this year's Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials - his third win at Burghley - with Mrs Rosemary Barlow's Avebury. It is 12-years since the 51-year-old last won here and while he is perhaps the most prolific rider in the world that was also his last four-star win. "It actually feels more like 20 years since I last won - is it only 12," laughed Andrew. "Burghley is my favourite event to ride at and Avebury is a joy to ride - there have been days when he's let me down and days when perhaps I've let him down but overall he is a lovely consistent horse. I came here expecting to go well - he's been on good form all year so I knew we had a good chance - I am not surprised but I am highly delighted." Clear rounds were few and far between over Richard Jeffrey's show jumping course - just four combinations from the 53 left in the competition did not add penalties to their score sheets in this phase. Both Oliver Townend and Armada and William Fox-Pitt and Parklane Hawk had two down which while retaining their fourth and third place also allowed both Andrew and the overnight leader Sinead Halpin and Manoir de Carneville a bit more breathing space. Andrew and Avebury took out just one pole which meant that Sinead had two fences in hand. Sadly Manoir de Carneville took out three poles handing the Land Rover Perpetual Challenge trophy and £55,000 first prize to Andrew and Avebury although Sinead received the runners up trophy. "He warmed up beautifully and yes it was a bit disappointing but I am really proud of him. We have had an amazing week - we've not done as much as these two guys either side of me - and I am really lucky to have the horse," said Sinead who travels back to America this week. William Fox-Pitt and Parklane Hawk finished in third place - high enough to ensure enough points for William to win this year's HSBC Classics™ series and it's $150,000 first prize. It is the third time in four years that William has won this lucrative prize. Andrew, just one point behind, was second. "It was close - I came to Burghley knowing the pressure was on and I knew that Andrew was on fantastic form and winning by one point is a bit close but thank heavens for Parklane Hawk who has been fantastic," said William. "Having two down is frustrating but what a record he's got - perhaps with a more ideal preparation this year he'd have been back to his old best." The lovely grey Avebury, who was eighth here last here, is by the eventing stallion Jumbo, who Andrew also competed. He was bred by Andrew and wins the SHB(GB) prize as the highest placed horse by one of the societies stallions. Avebury is the second Burghley winner by Jumbo - he also sired the 2006 winner Headley Britannia.

DOUBLE DELIGHT FOR LUCY

Lucy Jackson had a first Burghley to remember. The tall 34-year-old from Thame in Oxfordshire not only completed with two horses but was awarded the HSBC ClassicsTM Training Bursary as the highest placed competitor who has not previously completed an international four-star (CCI****) event. "With this award hopefully I will get even more training - I have been really lucky with the New Zealand High Performance Squad getting coaching and support; all these people giving you the benefit of their experience can only help and if I have even more I can hopefully be even better next year," said Lucy who was born in England and was a former member of British Junior and Young Rider Squads. In 1993 aged 15 she was the Schools National Champion and then a few years later in New Zealand was in the Talent and Development squad and then represented NZ at the Trans-Tasman Games and was long-listed for the 2008 Olympic Games. She spent seven years (2002-2009) in New Zealand working as a physiotherapist along side eventing horses and on return set up her own yard in Oxfordshire. This year she was a member of the New Zealand Squad for the Olympic Games - but was not selected for the team and so came to Burghley with Gillian Greenlass's 11-year-old Willy Do with who she finished in 19th place and the 15-year-old Animator, owned by Nigel Taylor and Kathy Evans with who she was 41st. I have definitely learnt a lot and there a few things I wish I could change - like Animator's stop and a few time penalties here and there - but it's great to complete with two at my first Burghley and first four-star."

BEN WAS GOOD

Ben Hobday is this year's winner of the prize for the highest placed rider 'under-25'. Ben aged 24 from Rossendale in Lancashire finished in 33rd place with his ride Gun A B Good (#34). It was the second completion of Burghley for Ben and Gun A B Good who finished in 41st last year, on their Burghley debut. This year the pair was 48th after dressage and rose up to 41st after cross country. They were one of just two combinations to jump clear in the morning session of the first 29 riders - albeit added 2 time penalties to their sheet - to move them up to a final 33rd. "I was particularly thrilled with him - as he struggles with show jumping and last year produced his first ever three-day clear round show jumping at Burghley, therefore the chances of him doing it again were minimal so I was over the moon when he did," said Ben. "He has tried his heart out all weekend." Ben began riding aged four and first tasted success when he won a 'first ridden' at Ponies UK. With the Holcombe Hunt Pony Club, he qualified for the Pony Club championships in all three phases; the first member to do so in his pony club for 25 years. Keen to become an event rider he went as a working pupil to Cheshire based Hannah Bate, then went to work for show jumper William Funnell. In 2006 with Upton's Who, Ben won the U-21 National Championships and the pair was selected for Britain's young rider squad. In 2007 they represented GB at the Young Rider European Championships, finishing on their dressage score in 6th place and the following year after 7th place at Chatsworth CIC3* the pair won team gold & individual bronze at the Young Rider European Championships at Kreuth. In 2010 Ben competed in his first four-star at Pau with Gun A Be Good, a horse bred in Yorkshire by show jumper Graham Fletcher. "Coming to Burghley last year gave me a bit more confidence this time - although the fences are still as big and I was quite nervous - but I knew we could do it," said Ben who now runs his own business Shadow Sport Horse Ltd producing event horses. "All in all we have had a fantastic experience at a fantastic event."

IZZY AND MATILDA ARE A WINNING COMBINATION

The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials will be an event that Izzy Taylor won't forget. The 29-year-old, seventh placed rider from Oxfordshire received the prize for the highest placed 'Burghley first-timer' while her ride, Briarlands Matilda won the prize for the highest placed British-bred mare. Izzy comes from an equestrian family and started riding at a young age. Her Grandmother Jane Whiteley was second at Badminton, her great aunt Anneli Drummond Hay won both Badminton and Burghley and her mother represented GB at Junior and Young Rider levels. Although offered a place at University to study Sports Science, Izzy decided her future was with horses and eventing. She started work at Hartpury College for breeders Sam and Linda Barr, breaking in and riding the young Welton horses and then spent time in Holland to train with her aunt, Anneli Drummond Hay, where she had the opportunity to work for Swiss Olympic show jumper Markus Fuchs. She recovered from serious injury from a fall in 2003 to win team silver and individual bronze in the 2004 European Young Rider Championships. She was then based for two years at the Opposition Stud during which time she was second at Windsor International and third at the Young Rider Championships, as well as successfully competing the Opposition horses up through the grades. Izzy took the ride on Briarlands Matilda in 2008 when the mare's former rider Tristram Owers broke his leg. Last year the pair completed Badminton in 54th place but improved on that by 47 places here at Burghley. "I had no expectations but Matilda is just awesome - its just a case of riding her," said Izzy who has her own yard near Chipping Norton. "She is quick and I knew Burghley would suit her. Matilda was awarded two embryo transfers by Twemlows Stud Farm. She was bred by the late Lorna Schuster and is owned by Guy Avis the Secretary of The Heythrop Hunt with who she has been since birth. Guy is much involved and does all her fitness work. "I backed and produced her as I did her dam and grand dam," said Guy who is now thinking of which stallion to use. Matilda is a daughter of ISH Miley who is by the Thoroughbred Idea. She is out of Briarlands Appleby who was a full sister to the former Badminton horse Briarlands Pippin (ridden by Susanna McCaire). Appleby is by the Thoroughbred Good Apple who also sired Badminton winner The Irishman and Pomeroy who was ridden internationally by Rodney Powell.

HAYLEY AND LOUISE WIN HORSE CARE AWARD.

Mountain Horse once again presented their 'Horse Care' prize to the groom of the best cared for horse at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. The prize, in recognition of the hard work and dedication of grooms, was judged over the four days by Irish FEI judge Jean Mitchell - although her job was secret until the award was announced. The first prize; £200 and an outfit of Mountain Horse clothing, boots and a framed photograph, was awarded to twenty-year-old Hayley Vowels from Horsham in Surrey the groom of Fernhill Present ridden by Alice Dunsdon. The event was not only a first visit to Burghley but also a first four-star for Hayley and her charge Fernhill Present and his rider. "I was really surprised to win this prize," said Hayley who works for Alice during holidays only, as she is a student at Lincoln University during term time. "He is an easy horse to keep happy - he is exactly the same away as he is at home and a lovely horse to deal with," said Hayley, who learnt some of her skills through the Crawley and Horsham Pony Club. "It takes me about an hour to get him ready each time - and there are no shortcuts." The runner-up prize of £100 and a pair of Mountain Horse boots was awarded to Louise Hales the groom of R-Star the lovely mare ridden by American Kristi Nunnink. Louise, from California, who formerly had her own horses and had previously groomed at Blenheim travelled over as 'just as a friend' because 'I love it'. Louise has a tough job as R-Star is grey. "Fortunately she is a clean horse and doesn't make too much extra work for me - as I like to start with a clean horse," said Louise. "She is a lovely mare I love looking after her - she is the most laid back mare ever - she never gets excited which makes my job easier." R-Star who has been based at Nick Gauntlett's Gloucestershire yard since arriving in the UK three weeks ago, travels back to California next week.

FIFTY THREE GO FORWARD TO FINAL SHOW JUMPING

After an exciting day of sporting cross country action and a record spectator attendance yesterday the final show jumping phase promises a nail biting finish to this year's Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. After the Final Horse Inspection fifty three horses now go forward to the final show jumping phase. Sadly both Nadeville Merze (#58) the ride of Burghley first-timer Nicolas Wettstein (ECU) 45th after cross country and Shanaclough Crecora (#63) the ride of Geoff Curan (IRL) in 10th place after cross country, were held and eliminated on re-inspection. Ideal Sebastian (#115) the ride of Jeanette Brakewell was not presented. American Allison Springer and New Zealander Jock Paget won the prizes for the 'best turned out' rider that was judged by Kate Green the Managing Editor of Country Life. The lower placed 29 riders are now jumping in the main arena while the top 24 start jumping at 14.30. Prior to the final show jumping The British Olympic silver medal team will be driven round the arena for a victory parade. American Sinead Halpin who is still on her dressage score and led the competition from the start has a fence in hand over Andrew Nicholson and Avebury, currently in second place. However just two fences divide the next six riders. If Sinead can win she will be only the third American rider to win here since the inception of the event in 1961. Bruce Davison, who is here this year as trainer, won in 1974 with Irish Cap and the last winner was Stephen Bradley in 1993. Andrew Nicholson (NZL) has won on two previous occasions; 2000 (Mr Smiffy) and 1995 (Bucley Province). If William Fox-Pitt and Parklane Hawk wins it will not only be a record seventh win for one rider but Parklane Hawk would be the first horse to win Burghley in consecutive years. Oliver Townend is also a former Burghley winner; he won in 2009 with Carousel Quest.

SINEAD IS STTING PRETTY

Sinead Halpin is 5.5 penalties ahead of the field at the end of cross country day at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. The American and her Selle Francais Manoir de Carneville who led the dressage, produced the class round of the day to maintain their lead. "He is not a speed demon but he is easy to adjust in front of a fence and it is my job to make his job as easy as possible," said Sinead who was 15th here last year on her Burghley debut. "Last year I was overwhelmed both with the size of the fences and not being familiar with the track - this year I was definitely a bit more comfortable," said Sinead. If she can maintain her lead to the end she will be the first American to win here since Stephen Bradley in 1993. Andrew Nicholson and his second ride Avebury are in second place having added just 0.8 pen to their dressage score. The New Zealander who is currently top of the HSBC world rankings had the benefit of an early clear inside the time with his first horse Calico Joe, a Thoroughbred bred for the track with who he moved up from 42nd to 8th. "It helped my second round going earlier on Joe who although is not very experienced, is very fast. After his round I knew then that it would be hard for most horses to get inside the time," said Andrew. British Olympic team silver medallist William Fox-Pitt and New Zealand Thoroughbred Parklane Hawk with who he won here last year are in third place - but collected 2.4 time penalties. "The horse was awesome he just galloped round - I shouldn't have got those time faults but I did waste a bit of time setting him up for his fences," said William. "The pressure was on but he proved he was a Burghley horse horse," said William who was complimentary about Sinead. "Hers was an amazing round to watch and she made it look easy - not many did," said William who retired his first ride Seacookie. Oliver Townend who has leapt up to fourth place - just 0.1 behind William - on Andrew Nicholson's former ride Armada also retired his first ride. "William walked past me on his way home after we had both retired and said; 'Shall we have another go this afternoon'. Oliver's second ride Armada was one of the four inside the time. "Armada is a fabulous horse and it is an honour that Andrew has allowed me to get on a horse that he has done so much with," said Oliver who won here in 2009 with Carousel Quest. Mark Todd the last rider on the course also put in an immaculate display of cross country riding to put in the fourth and final clear round of the day with the Irish-bred Major Milestone. The pair moved up 49 places from 64th to 15th. "He just cruised home," said Mark. "Last year we were a bit slow and this year the dressage didn't go so well - I knew I had nothing to lose and he gave me a brilliant ride." Throughout the day the most influential fence was the Trout Hatchery (fence 11a & b) - albeit the Discovery Valley (fence 6&7) was also responsible for 20pen on several sheets and Mary King retired Kings Temptress here after a run out. "It didn't surprise me that the Trout Hatchery caused problems as I always knew it would be difficult," said Course Designer Captain Mark Phillips. Australian Sam Griffiths benefited from re-routing Happy Times to Burghley after falling off on the Olympic cross country course at Greenwich, and are in fifth. German rider Kai Ruder enjoyed his clear round on the stallion Leprince Des Bois and the pair are in 12th. "It's lovely to ride such an experienced, brave powerful horse - this definitely was the course for him," said Kai. "I had hoped to have a good round at such a prestigious historic event and I couldn't have asked for more." British rider Polly Stockton and the Irish-bred Westwood Mariner also looked impressive cross country with a relatively fast round that moved them up from 37th to 14th while German rider Bettina Hoy the European Champion in 1997, also enjoyed a good ride on her Burghley debutant Lanfranco TSF - a former Burghley Young Event Horse finalist, to stand 16th. "It's really nice to be back at four-star and know that you can still do it," said Bettina who was full of praise for her good looking Trakehner. "He was fantastic - he answered every question and felt full of running at the end. I said this morning there's no greater feeling than a good cross country round - its just the best feeling in the world. Burghley is the biggest event in the world and if you get round here you can be competitive anywhere."

SINEAD IS UNBEATABLE

American Sinead Halpin and Manoir de Carneville produced a master class in cross country riding producing a fluent and fast cross country course at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials to come home inside the time. The pair now sits comfortably at the top of the leader board and Sinead is safe in the knowledge that they cannot now be beaten today. "I went out there like it was my job which it kinda is," said Sinead who acquired Manoir de Carneville whilst working in the UK with William Fox-Pitt. "He's super horse - and wonderful here as he never pulls. My whole thing is to keep it smooth - he not a thoroughbred so he doesn't land and bolt away with power - but every fence you are saving two seconds because he is so smooth. He is a French fairy he gallops above the ground." Sinead began riding at a young age and spent her summer holidays in Middelburg VA working for and training with Canadian Olympian Stuart Black. Under the tutelage of Stuart, Sinead made her three-star debut at the age of 19 (Killian) and caught the eye of David O'Connor and American trainer Mark Phillips by being one of only 10 horse and rider combinations to have no jumping or time faults. Sinead topped off her experience with Stuart by winning the Bromont CCI3*. She then moved to train with the O'Connor Equestrian Team (OCET). She came over to the UK to train with Sandy and Mark Phillips and then spent six months working for William Fox-Pitt, during which time, Carrig LLC purchased Manoir De Carneville. In 2011 the pair was third at Lexington Kentucky CCI4* and last year 15th at Burghley - they were short-listed for the American team for the 2012 London Olympic Games. "He finished well today - I had him fitter than last year and he felt much more with it - and I was smarter this year - you get that with experience," said Sinead who is now based in Pittstown New Jersey and is an ICP certified trainer with the USEA. Sinead is being philosophical about tomorrow's show jumping. "He's a good show jumper and he's jumped clean in the past. My plan is to go in with the same attitude that we are just going to do a job. If it doesn't go according to plan we just have a bit more homework to do." Manoir De Carneville was bred in Cherbourg, France by Andre Le Goupil. Manoir is a 12-year-old Selle Francais by Gaub (SF) a son of the American-bred Thoroughbred Count Ivor who was owned by the French National Stud. He is out of a mare by the SF Matador du Bois.

NEW ZEALANDERS PAVE THE WAY

New Zealand riders currently have the top of the leaderboard to themselves at the quarter stage of cross country day at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. A clear round inside the time for New Zealand veteran Andrew Nicholson and Calico Joe gave them the early lead although Andrew has been knocked off pole position by his Olympic team compatriot Jock Paget and Clifton Lush. Andrew and Joe who were 42nd after dressage, are currently the only pair to have completed the course inside the time of 11min 40secs. "He was right on all the minute markers, I think he was about three seconds out at one stage but it all felt pretty effortless for him, although the going is sticky and you can see every hoof print which I think means that the time is going to get harder to make throughout the day," said Andrew who rides Avebury later this afternoon. "It jumped like Burghley - big as ever - but he goes well between the jumps and wants to jump them which is great." Despite a very hairy moment at the Trout Hatchery when Jock almost parted company from Clifton Lush, Jock got back in the saddle and came home clear and was just five seconds over the time. "He didn't see the fence till last minute and I knew he started thinking - and you lose ground when they start thinking," said Jock. Somehow he climbed over it - luckily he is a lazy horse and stopped when he thought my leg was off. I did think I was a goner and he if hadn't stopped I would have been in the water. Fotunately he is a fast horse and managed to make up some of the lost time." New Zealander Lucy Jackson who is competing at her first Burghley and currently fourth with her first ride Willy Do came home with 20 time penalties. "I am really chuffed he tried really hard at his first four-star - he is so kind and obedient, I just had to ask the right questions. I know we had time faults but I am just so pleased for him and also our long term trainer," said Lucy who rides Animator later this afternoon. "On my next horse I will have to re-think some of the distances; the ones I walked that I thought were long actually came up quite short so I will have to bear that in mind - what a learning curve for both of us!" William Fox-Pitt retired Seacookie after a mistake at the first part of Discovery Valley and Oliver Towned retired ODT Sonas Rovatio after a refusal at the Trout Hatchery. Both have second rides later this afternoon.

SINEAD IS SURPRISED TO TAKE THE LEAD

American rider Sinead Halpin maintained the lead she set earlier in the day with 12-year-old Manoir de Carneville, to head the leader board at the end of dressage at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. The pair impressed the ground jury to score 36.3 - the only combination to receive a sub 40 penalty score and is 3.7 penalties ahead of the rest of the field. "Never would I have imagined I would be leading the dressage at Burghley," said Sinead who is based in New Jersey. "It is one thing to hope but I rarely come to a competition with a placing in mind; being in first place is amazing in the present company - in fact it is insane." Fellow American Allison Springer and Arthur IV moved up second place on a score of 40.0. "I certainly hoped for a more relaxed horse today," said Allison. "Arthur is a nervous type and the horse he was today would have put in a few spooks this time a few years ago. I knew what I could and couldn't push for and I was happy to have ridden an accurate test." The pair was eliminated last time they came here in 2009 but has enjoyed much success since in the USA - they were second at Lexington in April. "I have been to Burghley once before and it didn't go so well for me but since then I have learned a lot with this horse," said Allison from Upperville, Virginia. "A few years back I would have been terrified of Discovery Valley (fence no. 6 & 7) but it's been nice to walk around this time and feel less terrified and actually be looking forward to tomorrow." Australia's Clayton Fredericks with Walterstown Don is in third place, just 0.8 penalties behind on 40.8. "We have been working really hard on the dressage to be in this position and to be starting in a good place and I hope to jump every fence, stay on our feet and go through the flags at the end," said Clayton who believes that the course will suit his horse. "He is a big striding, great galloping horse and the course is certainly quite big and bold although fairly straight forward - there are however places where we can all be disappointed." German rider Kai Ruder and Leprince des Bois, the only stallion in the field, are in fourth, while New Zealander Andrew Nicholson and his homebred Avebury are in fifth. William Fox-Pitt is the highest placed British rider in sixth place with Parklane Hawk, the New Zealand Thoroughbred he rode to win here last year. However just 10 penalties separate the top 16 combinations which translates to the equivalent of 25seconds of time penalties on tomorrow's cross country. Cross country starts at 11.00 and their will be a full day of sporting action.

PARKFIELD QUINTESSENTIAL IS THE IDEAL FOUR-YEAR-OLD EVENT HORSE

Parkfield Quintessential ridden by Zoe Wilkinson was the convincing winner of the four-year-old final of the Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse. The eye-catching gelding owned by his breeders, the Bishop family of Ashburton in Devon, gained high marks throughout and the full 10/10 in the final section for suitability and potential from Eric Horgan to seal a runaway victory and the prize as the best British-bred The tall and elegant chestnut is by the Quattro B son Quicksilber out of a mare by Capitol I. "He was bred to be jumper but came out a bit light so we have gone down this route," said owner/breeder Sharon Bishop who is adamant that the Quintessential is not for sale. "We are going to keep him and come back here and win big Burghley." Dutch-bred Damaskus ridden by Angus Pimblott was second for owner producer Tanya Bridgeman from Lincoln - a regular at these finals. Another with jumping bloodlines Damaskus is by the KWPN graded Vigaro - a son of the international jumper Tangelo van de Zuuthoeve - out of a mare by Landgraf II. "I buy from a core of breeders in The Netherlands and have already got next year's finalist in the pipeline," said Tanya. Irish visitors Clare Abbott and Glenkeeran River - winners of the Irish young event horse equivalent - stood third. The lovely bay has more traditional make-up of bloodlines - he is by the Irish Draught Crosstown Dancer out of a Thoroughbred mare by Snurge. Eric Horgan was enthusiastic about the final. "It was a field of lovely horses - you would look seriously at all of them," said Eric. "The winner galloped well and had a lovely canter and is the sort you hope will be a four-star horse." The highest placed mare in the class was the fourth placed Dolly Tess another bred by Dutch veterinarian Jan Greve and produced by owner Judy Bradwell. Dolly Tess is by the young stallion Tjungske a son of Carthago out of a Julio Mariner mare. Results 1) Parkfield Quintessential by Quicksilber (Z Wilkinson) 89.0; 2, Damaskus by Vigaro (A Pimblott) 82.0; 3, Glenkeeran River by Crosstown Dancer (C Abbott- IRL) 81.0; 4, Dolly Tess by Tjungske (A Postolowsky) 79.0; 5, Hello Dolly by Sancisco (A Postolowsky) 78.5; 6, Porscher by Porsche (R Crosbie-Starling) 77.0.

TRADE STAND WINNER PROVES A STROKE OF GENIUS

'Bronze and Brush' a trade-stand promoting four artists in The Burghley Lifestyle Pavilion received the prize for best indoor trade stand at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials, while glass artist Carrie Anne Funnell won the outdoor stand award. This annual competition is secretly judged across the seven pavilions by long term supporter of Burghley, Mrs Susan Bealby. Jennifer Bell, who paints murals and trompe l'oeil is the brain child behind 'Bronze and Brush', and after the cancellation of the CLA Game Fair this year brought together the team of four. "It was a last minute decision to come to Burghley and amazingly we won so it is very rewarding indeed to be here," said Jennifer who is based in Nottingham. "We have all been friends for a long time through the Society of Equestrian Arts so it seemed like a great thing to do together." Jennifer's work includes painted walls one of which is at the George Hotel in Stamford as well as many of the rooms in Melton's Stapleford Park Hotel. In addition to her mural work, Jennifer is also a cartoonist capturing wry moments from hunting scenes, and an interior designer in addition to teaching and illustrating pony novels. Shropshire-based equestrian artist and pet sculptor Priscilla Hann has had her works exhibited in galleries in London in addition to many private commissions around the world including Australia, Europe and the US. Sculptor and artist Juliet Cursham started sculpting horses inspired by her work with polo ponies in Australia and working for a racing trainer in Newmarket after leaving University. Her recent work includes four life size bronzes displayed in Beijing and Cologne in addition to commissions from the Hong Kong Jockey Club. A regular on the Leicestershire hunting scene, Quorn supporter Juliet commented on the success of Bronze and Brush: "As a local girl, Burghley has always been one of my favourite events to visit as a shopper, so it is lovely to be on this side of the fence and hopefully people enjoy seeing all of our works throughout the weekend." The quartet is made up with Sculptor Judy Boyt whose best known work in eventing circles is the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton horse trials trophy. On display at Burghley on the collectives' stand is Judy's fantastic bronze encapsulating the spirit of dressage, showjumping and three day eventing which is part of the 'Art at the Edge' project to raise funds for the British Paralympic team. "It is lovely to be here exhibiting, since we all have such a great interest in horses and the sport. Burghley was great in accommodating us at such a late stage," said Judy. Winner of the Outside Prize, glass artist Carrie Anne Funnell works with kiln formed glass to create unique art. Working with her parter Sean, the couple pride themselves on producing quality craftsmanship. Commissions are undertaken where they can visit the site of installation and work with their clients requirements and briefs.
KITTY IS KING OF FIVE YEAR OLDS

Ceylor L.A.N. ridden by Kitty king is this year's winner of the five-year-old section of the Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse final. The pair gained the top marks for jumping 38/40 from judges Alain Storme (BEL) and Matthew Lanni and 9/10 for suitability and potential from former Irish Olympic team member Eric Horgan and were convincing winners heading the class by four marks. Kitty who has been in strong form this season with former young horse champions Zidante and Persimmon, found Ceylor almost by accident as she just happened to be in Sussex and looked in Horse & Hound to see if there were any young horses for sale in the area. "He was too big and too expensive but I was in Sussex and so was he," said Kitty. The good-looking KWPN gelding is by Veron (deceased) a KWPN stallion by the Quidam de Revel son Quite Easy. "He is not really my size as he is tall but he is a lovely quality horse and one to produce for the future," said Kitty who has sold three legs to a small syndicate of owners. Second place went to Oliver Townend and the Irish-bred Cooley SRS who is by the Holstein Ramiro B owned by Harthill Stud in Cheshire and was also in the arena shortly after in the stallion parade. Cooley SRS, now owned by Angela Hislop, was bought from Richard Shane in Ireland a year ago. "We head-hunted and bought Ramiro B because we were impressed by his stock," said Nina Barbour of Harthill Stud. Frank Diamond, also Irish-bred, impressed with his gallop to gain 10/10 in the final section and moved up the ranks into a final third place. This lovely stamp of a bay is owned by George Ward but currently being produced out of Judy Bradwell's ride and was ridden by her stable jockey Simon Grieve. "I have simply got the pleasure of riding him," said Simon who is also competing in the senior CCI for the first time. Frank Diamond by the well known sire Colin Diamond has completed a couple of intro events. "He is a really brave cross country horse - he has so much power he is definitely a future four-star prospect," said Simon. Fourth placed What a Puzzle by the coloured stallion Dexters Puzzzle and ridden by Kylie Roddy was the 'best British-bred' and Cekatinka last year's four-year-old winner and also ridden by Simon Grieve was the highest placed mare in 6th place. Results 1) Ceylor LAN by Veron (K King) 86; 2, Cooley SRS by Ramiro B (O Townend) 82; 3, Frank Diamond by Colin Diamond (S Grieve) 81; 4, What A Puzzle by Dexter's Puzzle (K Roddy) 80; 5th Cecilio by Dutch Dormello-OLD (A Sandberg) 79; 6th Cekatinka by King Kolibri (S Grieve) 79. .

ALL CHANGE AT THE TOP

It's halfway through the morning on Friday at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials and already the leader-board looks very different. American rider Sinead Halpin and Manoir de Carneville have posted the first sub 40 test to take a convincing lead with a score of 36.3 while Australian Clayton Fredericks is now in second place on a score of 40.8 with 10-year-old Irish-bred Walterstown Don "I feel so lucky to be here and have this horse," said Sinead who was 15th here last year with Manoir de Carneville. "The course is huge but its nice to have the advantage of having jumped it before and hopefully we can do it again." British Olympic team silver medallist Mary King and her mare Kings Temptress are just one penalty behind in third place. "This is her fourth Burghley and she was very settled and although still improving that was her best test at this level and so I am thrilled," said Mary who bred the mare who is by Primitive Rising. "She been round here before, she's capable fit and well - its up to me as a rider to do a good job." Both American Will Faudree and Australian Megan Jones have also ridden good tests and currently stand equal fifth - both received a score of 45.8. Will is riding Andromaque, another of the five mares on the start list this year with who he was 16th at the Lexington Kentucky four-star. "She is a good cross-country horse and I am excited and a little nervous, about tomorrow. The course is big but we're both ready for it," said Will who was placed here in 2007 with Antigua. Megan came over with the Australian Olympic squad as reserve for the team with Kirby Park Allofasudden. After Shane Breen's horse went lame they got called up but within a day had to drop out as Kirby Park Allofasudden developed a hoof infection and so Megan decided to stay on for Burghley. Megan was delighted with her dressage score. "I am so excited that he scored well - it is the first time out of Australia for him and always difficult to know where you stand in big international competition," said Megan who last competed in Britain in 2004 at Badminton although this is her first Burghley. "It's great to be here - we walked the course on Tuesday like a bunch of tourists taking pictures of everything."

Ruth Edge and Rogersdale retain the lead at the end of the first day of dressage at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. Having produced a rhythmical and fluent test the pair scored an average of 69.6% for a penalty score of 45.5. Ruth has ridden Sue Kerfoot's homebred 11-year-old since he was seven. "He is a really kind genuine horse and I trust him not to get lit up," said Ruth. "He also doesn't long to warm up and has lovely natural rhythm and cadence all which makes my and Judy Harvey my trainer's job a lot easier." This will be the first four-star track for Rogersdale. "Mark Phillips has built a good track with plenty to think about," said Ruth. "But Rogersdale is a brave horse and always looks for his jumps so hopefully he will enjoy himself out there - he certainly is enjoying the atmosphere here so far." New Zealand Olympic team bronze medallist Jonathan (Jock) Paget and Clfton Lush moved up to second place and are less than one penalty behind (46.2). The pair who was fifth here last year on their Burghley debut is the only non British combination in the top six. It has been a busy time for Jock who was 10th at the Olympics with Clifton Promise, as the Olympic team has been back in New Zealand for a media tour and only returned last Saturday. "Fortunately as long as he is kept in his routine Lush can be kept ticking over quite easily," said Jock. "Tomorrow he'll have a hack and a bit of fun and I'll make sure I know the course." William Fox-Pitt and Seacookie are now in third place but just 0.3 of a penalty adrift. William, who tomorrow rides Parklane Hawk with who he won here last year, is particularly pleased with the performance of Seacookie. "Considering the limited preparation especially as Badminton was cancelled - he is in a good frame of mind and probably the most rideable he's ever been," said William who is enjoying being at a British four-star event this year. Burghley is always special - the course is big and bold and there is a lot to jump. The main questions come early on - and there are plenty of them." British Young Rider and Burghley 'first timer' Emily Parker is now in fourth place while American first-timer Kristi Nunnink is in seventh place despite the nightmare of forgetting the test and losing marks for error of course. There are however just 6 penalties dividing the top ten and another day of dressage tomorrow.

COMANCHE IS A TRUE BURGHLEY CAMPAIGNER

For the last 11 years 19-year-old Comanche and his rider James Robinson, currently in 11th place, have been regular visitors to The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. 2012 marks the tenth appearance on the Burghley start list. Last year at the age of 18 Comanche finished in 29th place. His best placing at Burghley was 12th in 2002 - his first visit to Burghley and first ever four-star event. Their best ever result was in 2004 at Badminton were they were fourth - and Comanche is a member of the elite club of four that have completed Badminton seven times. James (45) who is a working vet in Herefordshire has owned Comanche since he was four-years-old, bought just backed from Sean and Sally Parkyn. An easy going temperament cannot however be attributed as the reason for Comanche's active longevity. "He is not relaxed at all and lives out most of the time although in the stable he is a lovely kind horse and is perfectly happy to have the children patting him," says James. "But atmosphere and crowds do get to him a bit and in true thoroughbred fashion he spooks easily and has a particular aversion to the click of cameras around the dressage arena." Comanche won his first ever event as a five-year-old - a Pre Novice event at Urchinwood Manor - this was one of just five events the young Comanche did during the first two years of his competitive life. "We have never over-run him especially as he gives 100% so it would be easy to over-work him," said James, "But he is also an economical galloper and jumper and doesn't waste energy and he is a tough one - he is never sick or sorry - but most importantly he loves his job."

FROM CALIFORNIA TO BURGHLEY

American Kristi Nunnink will be making her debut at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials this afternoon with her mare R-Star - just one of five mares competing here this year. The pair has made their first trip across the Atlantic specifically to compete at Burghley. Kristi (50) grew up and still lives in California. In her earlier years she ran a busy livery and training yard and was a regular competitor up to three-star level. In 2004 having lost her top horse Kirsti never imagined that in less then ten years she would be back at top level. But that was before 'Rosie' arrived in the yard. The 11-year-old grey mare has taken Kristi back to the top of her game - although the journey has not been without it's setbacks. At the beginning of 2011 whilst competing at Lexington the pair suffered a rotational fall. Kristi broke her ribs and elbow and three days later, was in hospital for a planned hip replacement meaning the pair was out of competition for the summer. During this time Kristi met up with former Burghley winner Bruce Davidson (1974 -Irish Cap) who offered to help the pair get back on their feet. Kristi drove Rosie the 3,000 miles to Bruce's East coast yard where they stayed for two months before competing at Lexington in April where after a glance-off they were 23rd. They then won their next event the CIC3* at Kalispell and has been based back with Bruce for the four months prior to travelling over to the UK. "Everything has come together for us both," says Kristi. "I am super excited to be here and a little nervous but we really felt this was the right course for Rosie as she is super bold and this is a super bold course." Rosie who is now described as a 'horse of a lifetime' is an American-bred mare of Holstein descent. Her sire is the German-bred Riverman who was exported to the US as was her dam Marisol who is by Corofino. "Rosie is a lovely mover and loves to jump and to me is very special," said Kristi.

ROGERSDALE GIVES RUTH THE ADVANTAGE

British riders head the leader-board halfway through the first day of dressage at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. Ruth Edge and Rogersdale (#31) have a one penalty advantage over William Fox-Pitt and his first ride Seacookie while Oliver Townend and his first ride ODT Sonas Rovatio are currently in third place. Burghley is the first four-star event for Sue Kerfoot's Rogersdale, a 10-year-old British-bred gelding by Welton Ambassador. "After the difficult season (due to the weather) we are really, really pleased to be here however Rogersdale will never have seen crowds or fences like this before - it will be a big step up for him," said Ruth who has recently relocated her long-standing yard in Cumbria to south Derbyshire. William and Seacookie were second (to Lenamore and Caroline Powell) here in 2010 and this is the first four-star for Catherine Witt's 13-year-old Trakehner since. "Considering he has not had a big competition for a while he is a good frame of mind and I am delighted with him although it is early in the day and there are several good dressage horses to come, said William after his test. "However this is definitely not going to be a dressage competition- the course is very big and wide, looks fantastic and the ground is superb. As always at Burghley it is the best you can expect because it's so well looked after," said William who compared the course today to a video he had seen of the event in 1990. "Look how green the grass is now - then it was yellow and it looked as though they were galloping on a sand track." Gary Parsonage will be first in the arena after the break at 14.30 followed by former British Young Rider gold medallist Emily Parker and Treefers who are competing in their first four-star competition together. German Olympic team gold medallist Dirk Schrade and the British-bred Hop and Skip will also perform their test this afternoon as will former World Champion Jean Teulere (Matelot du Grand Val #57.

EIGHTY FIVE IN CONTENTION

At the end of the First Veterinary Inspection 85 riders from 10 nations are on the start list of this year's Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. Eighty seven combinations came in front of the Ground Jury of; President, Susan Stewart (GBR), Martin Plewa (GER) and Jutta Koivula (FIN). Four horses were held for re-inspection; Rumour Has It (#28 Merel Blom - NED) was eliminated, while GV Billy Elliot (#46 Tim Boland - AUS) was withdrawn from the holding box. Paddy's Gold (#25 Rebecca Crosbie-Starling GBR) and Pricewise (#101 James Adams - GBR) both passed on re-inspection. British Olympic team silver medallists, Mary King and William Fox-Pitt were the winners of the 'best turned out' rider prizes, judged by Mandy Thomas. Both riders are included in the six former winners that are among the starters vying for the Land Rover perpetual challenge trophy and the £55,000 first prize. William and last year's winning horse Parklane Hawk, will be one of the favourites for the Burghley title. Another win this year would be an unprecedented seventh victory however as yet no horse has won Burghley in consecutive years and only one horse Priceless - and Ginnie Elliott (nee Holgate) - has ever won twice, in 1983 and '85. William is one of eight riders with two horses; others are Andrew Nicholson (NZL) Jeanette Brakewell (GBR) Oliver Townend (GBR) Sarah Bullimore (GBR), Lucy Wiegersma (GBR) Georgie Spence (GBR) and Burghley first-timer Lucy Jackson (NZL). Mary King rides her homebred mare Kings Temptress who is one of just five mares that are on the start list and only two mares have ever won Burghley (Headley Britannia 2006 and Maid Marion 1973). Nineteen-year-old Comanche will be the oldest horse this year and making a record tenth consecutive appearance on the start list with Herefordshire based vet and rider James Robinson who has owned Comanche for 14-years. French rider and former World Champion Jean Teulere (58) will be the oldest rider while first timer Rebecca Crosbie Starling is the youngest 22-year-old although both Peter Hannigan (IRL) and Lincolnshire based Emily Parker (GBR) are also both aged 22. Another 22-year-old is Young Rider gold medallist Harry Dzenis from Surrey who with Xam will be the Guinea pig dressage test rider this year. The first competitive rider in the dressage arena will be Louise Lyons (IRL) and Watership Down (#1) who will come before the Ground Jury at 09.30.

Burghley Horse Trials are very pleased to announce the extension of their long and successful relationship with BBC Sport for four years leading up to the Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympic Games: thereby ensuring the broadcasting of Burghley on the BBC up to and including 2016. This year's broadcast on Sunday 2 September on BBC Two and the BBC HD Channel between 3.15pm and 5.15pm also marks the first 'High Definition' production of The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. Upon signature of this new agreement, Elizabeth Inman, Event Director for Burghley Horse Trials, expressed her delight as follows. "Burghley is one of the world's top three Eventing competitions and having the BBC as our principal broadcasting partner is a vital element in our constant quest to create the best test of Eventing for both the sport's participants and fans." Philip Bernie, BBC Head of TV Sport says "We're delighted to extend our broadcast deal with Burghley Horse Trials for another four years. Burghley is a highlight of the international three day eventing calendar - one of the Olympic sports that enjoyed Team GB success at London 2012 with a team Silver medal. We've brought it to viewers on the BBC for many years and are very pleased to continue this relationship."

GREENWICH FENCES FEATURE AT THE LAND ROVER BURGHLEY HORSE TRIALS

As part of the London 2012 Olympic legacy three of the cross country fences from the Olympic three-day-event course at Greenwich Park will make a re-appearance on the cross country course of The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials (Aug 30 - Sept 2). The fences; 'The Olympic Games Horses', 'The Planet' and 'The Sundials' although three separate fences in Greenwich Park, will be combined to present a memorable feature complex in the Main Arena towards the end of Captain Mark Phillips course - already considered one of the best in the world. As well as Olympic fences several Olympic riders are also heading to the Lincolnshire venue for a crack at this year's £55,000 first prize and the Land Rover Perpetual Challenge Trophy. Four of New Zealand's Olympic bronze medal team including Olympic veterans Mark Todd and Andrew Nicholson, three of Britain's silver team medallists; Mary King, William Fox-Pitt and Kristina Cook and German team Olympic gold medallist Dirk Schrade are all leading contenders for this year's Land Rover Burghley title and included in the record number of international entries. "The three Greenwich fences will be an exciting addition to our cross country course and we are delighted to be the first to feature them," said Event Director Elizabeth Inman. "The course looks fabulous and combined with an exciting high-class level of entry we are definitely in for one of the best Burghley's yet." While the first two days sees the start of the competition with dressage in the Main Arena, Ring Two will also be busy; on Thursday it hosts the popular Burghley Inter-branch Pony Club Show Jumping and on Friday the finals of the Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse series, the culmination of highly competitive national qualifiers that aim to seek out the equine stars of the future. Over 500 selected trade stands, seven specialist pavilions, including a new 'Green Lifestyle' pavilion and the Burghley Foodwalk offer an unrivalled shopping opportunity for traders and visitors alike.

THE LAND ROVER BURGHLEY HORSE TRIALS WELCOMES OLYMPIC RIDERS

The excitement of the London 2012 Olympic Games is still in the air and now heads for Stamford, Lincolnshire as British Olympic team silver medallists Kristina Cook, Mary King and William Fox-Pitt head the list of entries for this year's Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials (Aug 30 - Sept 2). The top trio of British riders are among over 120 international riders, representing 15 nations, aspiring to compete at the famous three-day event acknowledged as one of the World's best. London 2012 Olympians from other countries are also included in this year's entry list. New Zealanders Mark Todd, Andrew Nicholson, Jonathan Paget and Caroline Powell, Australian Christopher Burton, Germany's Dirk Schrade and Ireland's Mark Kyle will all be in contention for the Land Rover Perpetual Challenge Trophy and a first prize of £55,000 - the next best thing to a gold, silver or bronze medal. Fox-Pitt who won Burghley for a record sixth time last year will undoubtedly be one of the favourites. He has a choice of four horses - for two places - including last year's winning horse Parklane Hawk. Not only would a win for Fox-Pitt be an unprecedented seventh at Land Rover Burghley but it would be a landmark 50th international three-day-event victory for the Dorset based rider. Also at stake is this year's HSBC FEI Classics™ series which for the first time will finalised at Burghley. After four-events Fox-Pitt is the current leader although he will have to fight off a challenge from second placed New Zealander Andrew Nicholson. The competition starts with dressage on Thursday 30 August and Friday 31 August before the challenge of Captain Mark Phillips' cross country course on Saturday 1 September. On Sunday 2 September the afternoon's final show jumping phase will determine who becomes this year's Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials champion.

ROADS FROM LONDON LEAD TO THE LAND ROVER BURGHLEY HORSE TRIALS

As the dust settles on a fabulous London 2012 Olympic Games the attention of the eventing world now turns to The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials (Aug 30 - Sept 2) in Stamford, Lincolnshire. With many Olympic riders now setting their sights on this great Event not only will Burghley be the next best thing to the Olympic competition but in a year of much-missed international sport due to the cancellation of rain-sodden events, for many riders and supporters it will be the highlight of the eventing calendar and the only four-star event on British soil this year. Top of the list of reasons to visit will be the spectacle of top class sporting action from some of the World's best horses and riders. Four of New Zealand's Olympic bronze medal team including Olympic veterans Mark Todd and Andrew Nicholson, three of Britain's silver team medallists; Mary King William Fox-Pitt and Kristina Cook and German team Olympic gold medallist Dirk Schrade are among the full house of entries. All will be vying for the £55,000 first prize and the unique Perpetual Challenge Trophy presented by Burghley's title sponsor, Land Rover who also supply over 60 trademark vehicles to support the event. This year there is even more at stake, as for the first time the HSBC FEI Classics™ series that began at Les Etoiles de Pau (France) last October reaches its climax to determine who will be this year's HSBC FEI Classics™ Champion and take home the lucrative $150,000 first prize. Andrew Nicholson, currently second in the Series, will undoubtedly be putting in a determined challenge to gain points and win. There will be plenty of opposition, not least from long-standing rival William-Fox-Pitt - the current HSBC FEI Classics™ series leader who scored a record sixth Burghley victory last year. William plays a strong hand of horse power in his mission for what could be his 50th international three-day-event success. All riders will first have to conquer Captain Mark Phillips distinctive cross country course of 33 specially built fences many of which are now landmark features of this four-mile track around Burghley Park: Lambert's Sofa, the Leaf Pit - with its daunting drop, the Cottesmore Leap - acknowledged as the largest eventing fence in the World and the Trout Hatchery are well-known signature fences. Captain Phillips considers the re-vamped Rolex Combination might be one of the most difficult cross country fences and the new fences in the Main Arena are an Olympic legacy straight from Greenwich Park. The competition starts with two days of dressage on Thursday and Friday. Thursday also features the Pony Club Team Jumping in Ring Two, which also hosts the popular Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse Finals on Friday. As much a part of Burghley as the horse trials, the finals are the culmination of national qualifying competitions designed to talent spot the equine stars of the future. A parade of sport horse stallions will fill the lunch-time break in Ring 2, while international dressage trainer Ferdi Eilberg will oversee a dressage display in the Main Arena. Saturday is cross country day - when an anticipated 90 horse and rider combinations will test their mettle around the Park and the competition reaches its climax with show jumping on Sunday. "With everyone very much on a sporting high after the London 2012 Olympic Games this year's Event will certainly be one of the most international, most competitive and definitely most memorable yet," said Burghley Event Director Elizabeth Inman. Land Rover Burghley is also acknowledged as one of the great British social occasions and is especially renowned for its shopping village. Over 500 selected trade stands, seven specialist pavilions, including a new 'Green Lifestyle' pavilion and the Burghley Food Walk offer an unrivalled opportunity for a spending spree. Even the Burghley app is being updated to include a shopping feature and a GPS 'location aid' to help users find their way around the showground.

The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games might still be uppermost in people's minds and the rain might have obliterated much of the sporting calendar but there is still plenty of equestrian sport to look forward to at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials, Stamford, Lincolnshire (Aug 30 - Sept 2). With the cancellation of both the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials and The Festival of British Eventing, The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials offers eventing enthusiasts a final opportunity this year to watch some of the world's finest horses and riders as they compete for the Land Rover Perpetual Challenge Trophy and a first prize of £55,000. The competition starts with two days of dressage in the main arena on Thursday. Thursday is also the day the inter-branch Pony Club show jumping that takes place in Ring 2 and on Friday Ring 2 plays host to the popular Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse Finals.
NEW DATE ADDED FOR DUBARRY BURGHLEY YOUNG EVENT HORSE SERIES

Bad weather may have forced the cancellation of the Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse qualifier due to be held at the Equi-Trek Bramham International Horse Trials, but there is still plenty of opportunity to qualify for the final of this prestigious series - with 14 more qualifiers up and down the country, plus the addition of a new date making it a total of 15 qualifiers before the final at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials (Thursday 30 August - Sunday 2 September 2012. An extra qualifier will be held at Field House Equestrian Centre, Staffs, on Wednesday 1 August. This will be in addition to the competition already scheduled at the venue for Thursday 19 July. The Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse class, for four- and five-year-old potential young event horses tests the skill and athleticism of the horse. Each horse performs a short dressage test, completes a round of show jumps, is examined in hand for conformation and type and then the top 10 come forward for final judging. There have been many illustrious winners. Tina Cook's 2008 Olympic bronze medallist Miner's Frolic is a past five-year-old champion, while Pippa Funnell's 2003 Burghley and Rolex Grand Slam winner Primmore's Pride won the final in 1998. The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials Event Director Elizabeth Inman said: "Over the past 25 years we have seen the Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse series grow in popularity and stature. The final is now not only an integral part of the main event, but it is also recognised as the ultimate showcase for young event horses."
BURGHLEY WINS 'INTERNATIONAL BEST EVENT' AWARD FOR SIXTH TIME

For the sixth time the international equestrian year book L'Annee Hippique has awarded The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials the riders' choice award as 'International Best Event' of the year. In 1987 L'Annee Hippique first asked riders in the Olympic disciplines to select their favourite shows based on considerations such as stabling, ground condition and course preparation, hospitality and prize money. Burghley won the inaugural award and was subsequently voted 'Best Event' in 1992, 1998, 2002 and 2008. "Winning this award is the icing on the cake of our anniversary year and recognises the attention to detail and hard work undertaken by my administration team and indeed our many volunteers," said Elizabeth Inman, Event Director. According to the riders it is the 'can do' and helpful attitude together with course preparation that they rate so highly at Burghley. British rider William Fox-Pitt, who recorded a sixth record win at Burghley this year commented that: "Burghley is one event that my team and I always look forward to. The course and going are always fantastic and the improvement in the facilities for riders, grooms and owners, over the years has been second to none. The atmosphere generated by the administration team and workforce is always friendly - everyone is made to feel welcome. Winning [International Best Event] again this year, especially as it was the 50th Anniversary, is well deserved".

RECORD DREAM WIN FOR FOX-PITT

A dream clear round over the coloured poles with Parklane Hawk gave William Fox-Pitt his sixth Burghley victory - and put him in the history books as the first rider to attain this achievement. "I can't believe it," said William who first won here in 1994. "He was superb. I might have looked cool but deep down this mattered a lot - it is huge and a real honour". As befitted the 50th anniversary event the finale couldn't have been more dramatic. Incessant and heavy rain completely changed the ground conditions and within the few hours between the morning and afternoons show jumping the going went from good to sticky. William said; "The conditions were against him and going into the arena I was feeling quite sick - Neuf Des Coeurs had three down and I had to go in there saying 'believe in him' but realistically thinking what were the chances of a clear round. I am so lucky to have him." It was an impressive four-star debut for the New Zealand-bred Thoroughbred owned by Catherine Witt and procured just 18 months ago. "He is still green but is one of my big hopes for next year." A clear round from Andrew Nicholson and Nereo had put the pressure on the top placed four riders. Mary King and her homebred mare, Kings Temptress, owned by Derek Baden had one down while Andrew on second placed Avebury took out three poles to drop down the order to a final eighth place while the dream win for Caroline Powell (NZL) and Lenamore disappeared when the 15.3hh, 18-year-old had two poles down, but only dropped them one place to a final fourth. Andrew and Deborah Sellars Spanish bred Nereo - by the Thoroughbred Fines out of a half bred mare by the Hanoverian Golfi - had to settle for the runner up slot. "Both my horses have done well and Nereo did a good job but William's horse jumped immaculately," said Andrew who thinks that this year's Burghley was 'one of the best'. "It's been a great Burghley - I think cross-country day was a good day for the sport and there is always such a great crowd here - just look at them - despite the rain they stay to the bitter end." Mary had done enough to take third place with Kings Temptress, by Primitive Rising, who won the award for the highest placed British-bred mare and Mary the prize as her breeder. "I am very proud of her," said Mary who also finished 21st with Apache Sauce. "I had two experienced horses here and am chuffed to bits with them." It was also a dream result for New Zealand Burghley debutant Jonathan Paget (27) and Clifton Lush. Another clear round elevated them to a final fifth place - the pair was 35th after dressage - and they finished on their dressage score. The young New Zealander also finished in 12th place with Clifton Promise. Leicestershire based Clea Phillips had another good Burghley result with Lead The Way who once again finished in sixth place and the pair was the third best British combination in a truly international competition. Lauren Shannon (24) also from Leicestershire proved that last year's 12th place with Zero Flight - for which she won best first timer - was no fluke. One of the afternoon's five clear show jumping rounds propelled them 11 places up the leader board after cross-country to a final ninth place and the prize for the best Under-25. American Boyd Martin concluded his emotional Burghley journey with Neville Bardos with a final seventh place for the miracle horse that was pulled from a fatal fire just three months ago. British rider Tom McEwen might have been disappointed to take out three poles wwith Dry Old Party but his final 19th place meant the 20-year-old won the prize for the highest placed British first-timer as well as the HSBC training bursary for what was an impressive Burghley and four-star debut by the youngest rider on the start list.
KING AND HALPIN WIN INTERNATIONAL PAIRS

The pair of third placed Mary King and Kings Temptress and American rider Sinead Halpin and Manoir De Carneville (15th) won the International Pairs Challenge at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. The pair, first after dressage, dropped to second place at the end of cross-country day, when Andrew Nicholson (Avebury) and Tom McEwen (Dry Old Party) took the lead. However the pair of ladies had fewer faults in the show jumping which put them back at the top of the leader board. It was a first time at Burghley for Sinead (29) from New Jersey who came to international acclaim with a brilliant performance with the Selle Francais Manoir de Carneville (by the Selle Francais Gaub) at Rolex Kentucky this spring where she finished third behind Mary's two rides - Kings Temptress (1st ) and Fernhill Urco (2nd). "I have had such a crazy experience this weekend," said Sinead who trained with Karen and David O'Connor. "Eventing is a completely different ball game over here but amazing." British rider Zara Phillips who enjoyed a great cross-country ride with High Kingdom to finish in a final 10th place and New Zealander Jonathan Paget and Clifton Lush (5th) took second place. Australian Sam Griffiths and Happy Times (16th) and Clea Phillips and Lead The Way (6th) were third. The pairs are decided after the first horse inspection; the top 15 ranked British riders are are paired, in reverse order, with the top 15 'rest of the world' riders taken from the FEI rider rankings. Each pairs' scores are added together and the pair with the lowest number of penalties wins the competition. The winning pair won £2,500.
GREAT DAY FOR THE OLDIES

Two eighteen-year-old horses completed the cross-country yesterday. Comanche the ride of James Robinson is currently in 19th place while Lenamore, last year's winner and Caroline Powell are in 3rd place. If little Lenamore - the Irish-bred grey is just 15.3 - can win again this year he will not only be the oldest winner ever but the first horse to win back to back Burghleys. Despite his relatively small size, he has proved himself the ultimate cross-country machine. The flying grey, owned by Janie and Lexi Mackinnon has also completed Badminton six times. Known at home as Ed, he was bought by owners Janie and Lexi Mackinnon as an untried four-year-old with a reputation and still has attitude. "He was and still is sharp - he can drop a shoulder in a flash - and is not a ride for anyone - but he is not malicious and I am sure that is what gives him his competitive edge," says his owner Lexi. "He is a dream to look after in the stable but you cannot hack him without another four-legged companion otherwise he'll come home without you. Walking him back to the stables after dressage or cross-country is also a challenge - it takes one each side to hold him and another of his other quirks is that he doesn't do warming up before dressage - he'll go straight from the box to the arena." Lenamore and Caroline were fifth after dressage and then jumped for fun around the cross-country to be one of ten clear inside the time to move up into third place. "He feels fantastic and certainly isn't ready to retire yet," said Caroline after her cross-country round. This year was the ninth that the Irish-bred Comanche has been on the start list at Burghley - he has also competed at eight consecutive Badmintons. Comanche, by the Thoroughbred I'm A Star, has been brought through the levels by his owner, Herefordshire vet James Robinson. "He gave me a good feel all the way yesterday," said James. "But it was an old fashioned track and probably suited him - we both remember doing them." It was not plain sailing however as James was nursing a broken collar bone - sustained not riding but in a competitive 'Father's race' at school sports day. "We got a bit untidy towards the end as I was struggling. I most certainly wouldn't have ridden any other horse round here with such an injury - he owes me nothing."
NEW ZEALANDERS MAKE THEIR MARK

This year there are ten riders from New Zealand competing at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. After the cross-country nine of the riders are still in the competition - five of them in the top twenty. It was first time Burghley for 27-year-old World Equestrian Games (WEG) team bronze medallist Jonathan 'Jock' Paget. Jock has been based in Dunsfold, Surrey for the season bringing with him several 'Clifton' horses from New Zealand. Both Clifton Promise (16th) - who was 7th at the WEG and Clifton Lush (14th)produced clear rounds for him yesterday with his second ride Lush going inside the time. "They were both very good and I was really stoked (excited and thrilled) to get round," said Jock who previously considered the track 'meaty with no freebies'. "Promise showed me how to get round and I learnt the lesson and made it back inside the time with Lush - it felt great." Craig Nicholai (46) from Rotorua was competing at Burghley for the second time it was however only just. The lorry bringing in his ride Just Ironic broke down and it was touch and go whether the pair was going to make it for the first horse inspection. Just Ironic was prepared on the lorry while it was mended and they got to the inspection with minutes to spare. However the dressage wasn't plain sailing either - Craig lost his way twice. "I had the wrong brain in," said Craig. "Thankfully Angela (Tucker) was very patient as was the crowd but I lost a lot of marks for that." The pair 77th after dressage came into their own on the cross-country course with the New Zealand-bred Thoroughbred coming home clear inside the time to bring them 45 places up the leader board to 32nd place. "It was absolutely brilliant - I couldn't have asked for more," said Craig. "It was a really hard test - lovely huge jumps and he nailed it. I was happy to get home safe - under the time was amazing." British based New Zealander Neil Spratt has also enjoyed a good two days so far with the British-bred Upleadon, by Welton Crackerjack to be 19th after cross-country and eventing legend and double Olympic gold medallist Mark Todd is currently just outside the top 20 with the Irish-bred Major Milestone. And of course the Land Rover perpetual challenge trophy might yet go to a New Zealander - both team veteran Andrew Nicholson and last year's winner Caroline Powell are within a whisker of winning.
ALEX WINS 'HORSE CARE' AWARD

Freelance groom Alex Van Tuyll, the groom of Dry Old Party (no. 44) was awarded the Mountain Horse 'Horse Care' prize at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. The award judged by Polly Lochore, is awarded to the groom of the best cared for horse based on the presentation, condition and care of their horse throughout the event. Alex from Dorset formerly worked for William Fox-Pitt. During her ten-year stint at his yard she was the groom at Burghley for Burghley winners, Highland Lad (2002), Ballincoola (2005), Parkmore Ed (2007) and Tamarillo (2008). It was after this win that Alex left to freelance both as a groom and cook. This year is the second consecutive year that she has groomed for the youngest rider at their first four-star event - last year she groomed for Laura Collett and Ginger may Killinghurst. One of the major factors that makes a successful groom is Alex believes, 'going beyond the call of duty'. "You have to be prepared for the unexpected and plan ahead and I always bring extra kit in case of emergencies," said Alex who was up at 05.00 this morning to attend to her valuable charge. "But trying to keep the horse in his normal routine as much as possible is important which involves plenty of grazing in-hand. Yes there is a lot of standing around on the end of a rope but that allowed him to absorb the atmosphere while staying relaxed which is vital." Results 1, Alex Van Tuyll (Dry Old Party) 2, Rachel Nicholson (Cadoc Z) 3, Hesther Owen (Highland Prince) 4, Samantha Parker (Sidnificant) 5, Jane Boggis (High Havoc) 6, Sharon Mepham (Easy Target/Sir Percival) 7, Lewis Gudgeon (Chilli Morning) Become a fan of The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials Official Page on Facebook and keep up to date with the Event.
Fifty five horses will go forward to the final day's show jumping at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. Instant Reaction (no 18) the ride of Ginnie Turnbull (GBR) was withdrawn from the holding box. Wiltshire based Georgie Spence won the prize, for the best turned out rider at the horse inspection, judged by Eileen Green the editor of the Stamford Mercury.
It is close at the top. A mere 3.7 penalties, less than the value of one show jump down, divides the top four after the cross-country at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. Just a clear round of show jumping now separates leader William Fox-Pitt from a record sixth Burghley victory. William and the New Zealand-bred Thoroughbred Parklane Hawk, for who it was the first four-star course, put in a clear round inside the time and moved to the top of the leader board when dressage leader Simone Deitermann was eliminated after a fall from Free Easy NRW. "It was a big attacking track this year and we all knew we had our work cut out," said William who is also in ninth place with Neuf Des Coeurs. "Parklane Hawk is a horse I rate highly but you never know and it is always a relief to come home clear. And he came home full of running and is one who is very exciting for the future." Andrew Nicholson also put in an early clear round with his first ride Rosemary Barlow's Avebury to move up three places to second but added 2.8 time penalties to his dressage score with Deborah Sellers Nereo. The penalties resulted in a drop of one place to fifth. "The course rode very big and the first half was intense albeit the second half gave you a chance to catch up a bit more but over some very big single fences. Avebury was very good and while Nereo would have been quicker at the halfway stage he began to tire in the second half." Last year's winners Caroline Powell and Lenamore gave yet another sparkling display of cross-country riding to complete on a clean sheet and move up to third. If the eighteen-year-old Lenmore can win again he will be the first horse to win the event two year's in a row and most certainly the oldest. "He is an amazing horse," said Caroline who is based in the Scottish borders. "As soon as he arrived here on Tuesday he knew exactly where he was and was even trying to tell me which way to go on the cross-country course. Yet again he gave me an amazing ride." Mary King and Kings Temptress dropped one place from third to fourth and is not far behind with her first ride Apache Sauce who is in seventh. From the 78 starters 10 combinations came home clear inside the time. The one to benefit most was New Zealander Craig Nicolai, whose fast clear with Just Ironic moved him up 45 places, from 77th to 32nd, while local rider Angus Smales from Rutland jumped 39 places up the leader board with Ballyvooney. Fifty three of the 58 finishers jumped clear rounds a result that pleased course designer Captain Mark Phillips. "I was relieved to see 53 clear rounds but I think the reason that few finished with penalties is that if you had a stop early on then this course drained the confidence out of the rider. But in general riders respected the course and it rode well." Burghley Director Elizabeth Inman was happy with the outcome of the day. "I came in this morning worried by potential traffic problems (caused by the closure of the A1) but in fact as well as an increase of advanced sales of 30%, the figures on the gate also went up by 4% and I couldn't be more pleased." The final horse inspection takes place in the main arena at 09.00hrs and show jumping for the lower placed riders at 10.30hrs.
A CLEAR ROUND FOR TOM

Youngest rider Tom McKewen made an impressive debut at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. The 20-year-old from Wiltshire came home clear inside the time with Dry Old Party at his first four-star event. "I am immensely proud of the horse," said Tom. "Where I got it wrong he got it right and where I got it right it was amazing and the course certainly lived up to the promise of massive." Tom has only ridden the former racehorse who shares the same sire - Un Desperado - as Gold Cup legend Best Mate since last year and is now owned by Jess Meed. "I have to say a big thanks to Alex Franklyn who has helped me so much with the horse," said Tom who also trains with former British team rider Rodney Powell before adding that it might not be a 'dry old party tonight'. While Tom is the youngest rider Comanche (58) the ride of Herefordshire vet James Robinson is one of the oldest horses competing at this year's Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. The veteran 18-year-old, who has been on the Burghley start list for a total nine times, has just completed the cross-country with 7.6 time penalties.
RAPTUROUS RECEPTION FOR BOYD

It was an emotional return through the finishing flags for American Boyd Martin and Neville Bardos (no 46) who came home clear inside the time at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. It is just three months since Neville was pulled out of a burning barn that killed six other horses and it was unknown whether he would ever recover from the smoke inhalation. A few weeks later Boyd suffered a second tragedy when his father was killed. "It has been a terrible time - it is great to do something good," said a visibly moved Boyd, who bought the former racehorse for just 850 dollars as a three-year-old off the track in Australia. "We have had only eight weeks to get ready for this and he has not jumped much since the World Equestrian Games. But I knew he had heart - he has never had a time penalty. He has kept me going through everything and it was good that we had this to aim for. Burghley is a breathtaking event - it is just so beautiful."
FOX-PITT FLIES INTO THE LEAD

After his cross-country round five times Burghley winner William Fox-Pitt with Parklane Hawk (no 14) has taken the lead at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. The pair can now only be beaten by the dressage leaders, the German combination of Simone Deitermann and Free Easy NRW (no 89). However the margin is so slighht that they cannot be more than one second over the time in order to keep the lead they gained in the dressage. "My goodness that horse can gallop," said William of his former racehorse. "Halfway round we were down on the clock but we clawed it back. It was massive all the way but then you don't expect a holiday at Burghley." After the first 20 riders three have been inside the time; as well as William Fox-Pitt, New Zealander Andrew Nicholson with his first ride Avebury came home clear two seconds inside the time and Francis Whittington with his first ride Sir Percival came home within the optimum time of 11min 40sec. British Burghley first-timer Joy Dawes from Buckingham was one who was delighted to complete with Finnisterre, coming home clear and adding just 8.0 time penalties to their score. "That was absolutely fantastic" said Joy. "There were so many difficult fences I wasn't sure whether he would come up with the goods and that I would ride it right - but I am really delighted with him."
DEITERMANN FINDS DRESSAGE EASY

Burghley 'first-timer' Simone Deitermann (30) with Free Easy NRW is the new leader at the end of dressage at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. The German rider from Saerbeck, near Osnabruck literally pipped British rider William Fox-Pitt to the post and has just 0.4pen in-hand. "At the beginning of the test my horses was very nervous - in England and on grass he always gets a bit nervous - so he made a couple of errors but he did a good job and I am happy to be in the lead," said Simone. Free Easy has a bit of a dressage pedigree being by leading Westphalian dressage sire Florestan albeit he is out of a Thoroughbred mare and was specifically bred for eventing. "It is my first time here and I had not realised it was all so beautiful. The course is also beautifully presented but it's difficult - not too technical but there are a lot of big fences. However we need a good result as we need to qualify for the Olympics," said Simone. William Fox-Pitt is now second with Parklane Hawk albeit he and Simone were the only ones to gain scores in the 30's. William also moved into the top ten with his second ride Neuf Des Coeurs. Mary King and her second ride Kings Temptress deposed Andrew Nicholson from the top three - the New Zealander however remains in fourth with his second ride Nereo narrowly ahead of stable mate Avebury in fifth. Mary was particularly pleased with the test from her homebred mare, a daughter of Thoroughbred Primitive Rising out of a Louella Inschallah mare. "She is a cool character and has always been consistent in her dressage but up till recently has lacked flair. However now she is more mature and stronger she is able to be more expressive," said Mary who is looking forward to tomorrow's cross-country. "Both my two are capable of jumping round and it is up to me to make sure we do a good job. It will be interesting to see how it rides but I think it will be a good course for first-timers as it encourages bold forward riding." Others to have a good day in the dressage arena were; last year's winners Caroline Powell and Lenamore who are in sixth place, British rider Laurence Hunt and Phoebus (9th) while the stallion Chilli Morning also gained an average score of 68.33 for 18th place. However less than 10 penalties separate the top 20 combinations - the equivalent of just 25 seconds over the optimum time.
CEKATINKA WINS FOUR-YEAR-OLD FINAL

The Dutch-bred mare Cekatinka with Rosalind Canter in the saddle won this year's four-year-old Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse final. Another bred by Dutch dressage team vet Jan Greve, she was bought and produced by Judy Bradwell and is the fourth four-year-old winner for former Burghley winner and locally-based Judy. Yorkshire-based Joanne Pullan now owns the mare, by international show jumper King Kolibri, sixth in the Grand Prix in Dublin this year, out of a mare by the Thoroughbred Julio Mariner. "I first saw her as a three-year-old and watched her being broken. She moved beautifully and has a superb temperament. Hopefully she is for me to event, but I wasn't expecting this," said Joanne. Cekatinka was pulled in first in the final phase (suitability and potential) giving her the maximum 10 marks and moving her to the top of the line. Matthew Wright and Ask The Boss, an upstanding and well-balanced big bay gained nine marks in this final section to take second place. By Dutch-bred Grand Prix show jumper Silvano (by Corland), Ask The Boss was bred and found in Ireland. "We bought him out of a field near Wexford last year," said owner Ian McKie. "He was untouched but had so much presence and star quality. You have to give him a lot of respect, but as long as they have the ability that's the most important. The plan is very much for him to go eventing." Burghley chairman Richard Jewson and his wife Sarah were at the ringside to see their horse Billy Cuckoo take third place with Pippa Funnell. The attractive 16hh bay mare,by William Funnell's Nations Cup team jumper Billy Congo was one of two to gain the top mark - 38/40 - in the jumping phase.
LORNA CLARKE RECALLS HER WINNING MOMENTS

Former Burghley winner Lorna Clarke is one of many winners returning to The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials for this year's celebratory 50th anniversary lunch. Lorna (nee Sutherland) a winner on two occasions, first won here in 1967 with the rather plain skewbald Popadom - who even at the time was considered an unlikely winner as he was out of mare that once pulled a dray. They however confounded their critics by leading the dressage with a 20 penalty margin - producing a then record breaking mark. "No-one thought that Popadom stood a chance and everyone was very surprised that a horse of his type could even do dressage", remembers Lorna who later became a BBC commentator for the event. Despite leading the dressage most presumed that once up against the other mainly Thoroughbred horses he would not be able to complete the steeplechase in the time as well as a four mile cross country course as well. "After the steeplechase - which he did well inside the time - I did think he might be finished but coming back through the park he saw the deer and got such a fright it brought him back to life," said Lorna who recalls the changes to the event over the year. "When I first won there was just field for practice and warming up whereas now there are several all-weather arenas - but having said that the standard of dressage is much higher now - thank heavens." In 1978 Lorna gained her second win - with Greco a horse of more respected breeding. "I thought I had sold Greco to Canada. But he failed the vet and came bouncing back and incredibly we went on to win - the biggest favour that vet did me." The Thoroughbred Greco was also fifth and sixth the next two years. "He was a charming sweet-natured horse so much that when my son was young I used to sit him on his back while I fed the other horses," remembers Lorna who completed Burghley on 16 occasions as well as winning team gold and an individual silver medal (1985) and a second team gold (1989) at European Championships held at Burghley. "I had one of my more exciting moments during one of the European Championships when coming down to the Trout Hatchery I was catching up the Italian rider before me. He was taking the long route and I could see the fence judge was thinking of stopping me - but I shot through via the short route as I had the right of way. The cheers from the crowd carried me for the next five fences - it was amazing and what makes it all worth while." So what does Lorna make of this year's cross-country course? "From what I've seen so far I love it - with the exception of those skinnies at the bottom of fence 4. That is not cross-country it is show jumping. Cross-country is jumping hedges, fences and walls. I love the big clean fences like the hedge (Herberts Hedge - Fence 8)all big great fences you can ride at - I love it."
CONVINCING WIN FOR ZENO

British European team bronze medallist Piggy French added to her weeks spoils claiming the Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse five-year-old final with Sara Fowlers Zeno Das Gluck. The combination ran out the undisputed winners leading the field into the final phase - potential and suitability - where judge Bridget Parker pulled them in first to gain the maximum 10 points for this section putting them 4.5 marks ahead of the rest. Bred in Germany Zeno is by the leading Trakehner event stallion Grafenstolz. He was originally bought out of Germany by Chloe Newton and bought by Sara Fowler in March. "Sara wanted a horse that was not too big and pretty, he fitted both criteria and I liked his type," said Piggy. "Due to my commitments he hasn't done much. He was broken and produced beautifully by Chloe and I haven't had to do a great deal to get him here." Last year's winners Ben Hobday and the good looking Shadow Boxer, also German-bred, returned to stand second. Lancashire based Ben, a British Young Rider team gold medallist, owns the dark bay gelding by Quidam de Revel son Quidam Rubin in partnership with Dawn Grundy. Whilst last year Ben had to withdraw his ride Guna Be Good this year he will be making his Burghley debut with the horse and will be last into the dressage arena this afternoon. Caroline Powell, third in the four-year-old class last year, stood third again but this year with the Irish-bred Up, Up and Away. By the leading Irish Sport Horse sire Puissance he is out of Coolmore Frolic who is by the Selle Francais Paris Lights by Alme. The lovely grey impressed jumping judges Rowland Fernyhough and Luis Alverez de Cervera who gave him 39/40 in this section. New Zealander Lizze Brown gained the award for the highest placed mare Bulana who stood fourth. Another bred by Dutch vet Jan Greve Bulana is by the Numero Uno son Tygo and was bought from Judy Bradwell just four weeks ago. "She is our hope for Burghley in five-years time," said Lizze who is based with Judy.
MIRACLE RECOVERY FOR NEVILLE BARDOS

The fact that Boyd Martin (USA) and his horse Neville Bardos are competing at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials at all is nothing short of a miracle. Neville Bardos was one of five horses rescued from a stable fire at the barn that Boyd rented from leading American rider Phillip Dutton. The fire that was caused by an electrical fault and happened at the end of May killed six horses. Neville Bardos was the last of the rescued horses to get out. "Due to smoke inhalation the vets didn't give him much of a chance but we've just taken it day by day - certainly being at Burghey is a bit of an emotional one. He cheated death and it really is remarkable that he is here at all," said Boyd. Last year the combination was fourth at Lexington CCI**** and in October at the World Equestrian Games took individual 10th place. It is however the first time that Boyd will be competing at Burghley. "I'd love to see those finishing flags," said Boyd who has a good dressage score of 49.7. "We've had a tough preparation but he can run with the best. He looks good, feels fit and we'll have a go."

FLYING THE FLAG FOR THE BOYS

Chilli Morning (no.93), owned by Mrs Lisa Stone and ridden by Nick Gauntlett (GBR) is the only stallion competing at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials this year. It will be the first four-star event for the German-bred SHB(GB) graded stallion. He is by the German-bred Thoroughbred Phantomic, a grandson of Northern Dancer out of Koralle who is by the Mecklenburg stallion Kolibri an international show jumper and successful sire of jumpers. Nick who is based in Chipping Sodbury close to Badminton says; "Chilli is a really laid back horse which is just as well as the yard is not really set up for stallions but fortunately he is extremely well-behaved. "He has a fairly prominent place in the yard as he likes to keep an eye on what's going on and it also means that he gets seen as he seems to like being the centre of attention. He also likes to know his neighbours so Rocket Science always lives opposite to him and Arkela in the next stable - he really doesn't like a new horse next door and can be quite threatening if there is another horse put in there. " Nick and Chilli will start their Burghley at 12.30 today. "At a competition he loves showing off and will rise to the occasion in the arena. But he also likes going to stud and is very easy for them to deal with he wouldn't dream of mixing business with pleasure." Progeny of Chilli have already been making their mark and several of Nicks homebred stock have recently done well at the BEF Baileys Horse Feeds Futurity, a series that aims to identify British-bred potential sport horses and ponies. At the recent Futurity assessment at Hartpury College Chilli Morning had six of his progeny forward in the eventing section. All owned by Nick and all attained First or Higher First Premiums. . Nick said; "Three-year-old Jalapeno (out of a mare by the Thoroughbred Shaab) is an exciting prospect as she is looking really athletic and an exciting first example of what Chilli can produce." The highest score of Gauntlett's six entries at Hartpury went to the yearling filly Tender Morning.
HAVE A GOOD DAY AT BURGHLEY

All roads seemingly lead to The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. The crowds are pouring in and another fine day is forecast for the second day of dressage. As well as weather the competition also heats up; will William Fox-Pitt retain his lead or will Pippa Funnell (GBR), Andrew Nicholson (NZL) or Mary King (GBR) head him off? Lucinda Fredericks, (AUS), especially known for her skills in the dressage arena and the German-bred mare Prada (no.84) may well also pose a threat to the leaders. Today is also the day of the Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse finals that takes place in Ring Two. The five-year-old final is underway and the four-year-old final takes place this afternoon. And in the main arena at the end of the mornings dressage international dressage trainer, Ferdi Eilberg, trainer to the Irish team and Mary King, will over see a dressage demonstration assisted by his daughter Maria and son Michael both of who compete internationally.
KILPATRICK RIVER POWERS INTO TOP THREE

Elizabeth Power and Kilpatrick River performed the best test of the afternoon to take third place at the end of the first day of dressage at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. British rider William Fox-Pitt and Parklane Hawk are still in first place and New Zealander Andrew Nicholson and Avebury retain second. Having already won here on five previous occasions, as has Mark Todd and Ginny Elliott, another win for William would ensure a record sixth victory. And as well as Parklane Hawk to help him he also has the French-bred Neuf Des Coeurs entered. While Neuf Des Coeurs has completed and been placed at four-star - he was fourth at Lexington in May - it will be the first four-star event for Parklane Hawk. A New Zealand-bred Thoroughbred Parkland Hawk only came out of training five years ago and was then produced for eventing by New Zealander Matthew Grayling. He has been with William just 18 months and he ended his first season in England winning the Blenheim CCI***. "There is no doubt that this will be a big four-star test for him but he's ready for it," said William. Andrew Nicholson has also won here on two previous occasions - 1995 (Buckley Province) & 2000 (Mr Smiffy) - and this year also has two opportunities to gain his third win getting off to a good start with the grey Jumbo gelding Avebury. "Avebury is capable of going round here and hopefully I'll give him a good ride and he'll do his job," said Andrew who rides the Spanish-bred Nereo Later tomorrow. Despite having done the dressage at Burghley last year it will be the first full blown Burghley for Irish rider Elizabeth Power and Kilpatrick River. Last year the pair got called up for the Irish team for the World Equestrian Games and therefore had to withdraw. Kilpatrick River, like Parklane Hawk, is Thoroughbred and raced 22 times before coming out of training and being produced for eventing. The combination was 11th on their Badminton debut in 2009 but this year fell halfway round the course. "I am delighted with the build up to Burghley - it's the best preparation for an event we've had," said Elizabeth who was warmed up for her dressage test by Ferdi Eilberg who trains the Irish Squad. "I was delighted with his test - he's well capable and put it all together and it was me and him together today. The changes were the best four we've done all week." Elizabeth will now concentrate on walking the cross-country course. "It's a big bold course but he's got plenty of scope and with that many jumping efforts ahead of us its good to know that he's not short of scope."
GIN & JUICE SHOWS SPIRIT

This year is the first time that California-based Canadian Hawley Bennett-Awad has competed at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. Hawley (34) is however no stranger to the big time; last year with Gin & Juice she was a member of the Canadian team that impressed to win team silver at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky. Earlier this year the pair came over to compete at Badminton and Hawley gained her first Badminton completion. Gin & Juice AKA Ginny, is one of the ten mares that are competing at Burghley and at only 15.3hh is one of the four smallest horses. "She might not be big but she thinks she is King Kong," said Hawley of the Thoroughbred mare that was bred by Linda and Terry Paine owners of Kingsway Farm in Temecula where Hawley in based. "She is a feisty mare and one of the most athletic horses I have sat on and the one I want to be on for my first Burghley." Hawley began riding Ginny when she was a 'spunky' five-year-old and the pair rose quickly through the grades. In 2009 they won the Canadian Bromont CCI**** and the following year was 17th at Lexington CCI**** gaining selection for the team for the World Equestrian Games and Ginny was awarded the USEA 'Mare of the Year' award. "That award is very special to me - she is such a little rock star," said Hawley who trains with Buck Davison. Hawley and Ginny have travelled over from California especially for Burghley and will return home next Wednesday. "Within a week she will be grazing in the field with her friends," said Hawley who first of all has to concentrate on the cross-country course. "Everyone is saying how big it is but for us the bigger the better and I'm excited and looking forward to getting out of the start box on Saturday."
FOX-PITT SWOOPS INTO THE LEAD

William Fox-Pitt and Parklane Hawk head the leader board halfway through the first day of dressage at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials. The pair was the only one whose score managed to break into the 30's - just - scoring 39.7 despite William being penalised for an error of course as he made his final halt at the wrong marker. "Getting into the thirties has a good psychological effect and I am delighted with him, I just hope that mistake doesn't prove expensive," said William. "Parklane Hawk coped really well; he has a superb brain on him, a lovely temperament, a good trot and is easy to ride - all those things you dream of in a horse and I have a lot of faith in him." Parklane Hawk, who is owned by Catherine Witt, was the winner of Blenheim last year. He is a 12-year-old New Zealand bred Thoroughbred by Grosvenor who is also the sire of Santos the ride of New Zealander Blyth Tait. Burghley will be the first four-star event for Parklane Hawk. "The course is big and it walks big and is built for a bold, brave horse," said William who also rides Neuf Des Coeurs tomorrow. "Parklane Hawk is a brave horse and gave me a lovely ride at Blenheim and I am optimistic that he is ready for this challenge." Veteran New Zealander Andrew Nicholson scored a tidy 42. with Rosemary Barlow's grey Avebury and is currently second. "I was very pleased with that - he is very sound and doesn't mind the atmosphere which was quite big for early Thursday as there looks to be more people here than usual at this stage." Andrew who has won here on two previous occasions believes that the course this year is definitely different. "It's big and pretty much Burghley but with a good change of style and hopefully we will enjoy it," said Andrew who also has a second ride, Nereo, later tomorrow afternoon. Mary King and Apache Sauce, who has been well placed here in previous years, are currently third. The dark chestnut by the Thoroughbred Endoli has not always been the most reliable in the dressage arena. "I am chuffed to bits - that was definitely one of his better tests. He can be a bit of a redhead and can turn from calm to excited just like that but today was lovely," said Mary who is impressed by the cross-country course. "It is an amazing beautifully presented course. The fences are not as technical as we have seen in recent years - it is a bigger, bolder straighter course. Apache Sauce is very capable as long as his rider does the right thing," said Mary with reference to her fall at the European Championships in Luhmuhlen last week.

TOM AIMS FOR FIRST FOUR-STAR BADGE OF HONOUR

Twenty-year-old Tom McEwen is the youngest rider at this year's Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials - 34 years younger than five-times Burghley winner Mark Todd who has the distinction of being the oldest. It will be the first four-star event for Tom who is from Wiltshire and his horse Dry Old Party. Tom comes from an equestrian family; his father Bobby is an equine vet in Lambourn, his mother Ali was a show jumper and younger sister Ella also events and was a member of the British pony team in 2007 and 2008. Tom too has also come through the ranks of the sport via the British pony, junior and young rider teams. Last year he was a member of the Young rider team that brought home a sixth successive team gold from Pardubice (Czech) and this year riding Private Rudolph repeated the team win with the British Young Rider team at the recent European Championships at Blair Castle. At the end of last season Tom was awarded the Edy Goldman Trophy for the rider 'under 21' who has won the most British Eventing points as well as being awarded the Horse Trials Support Group Young Rider Training Bursary. "Being at Burghley is a bit daunting, especially as I don't really know it that well, I only came here for the first time last year," said Tom after Dry Old Party had passed the first horse inspection. "It is a massive four-star cross-country track but I think it should ride well. Although there are a few fences where you will need to keep a line there are no trappy fences - if you can see a stride and go you should have a good ride." While Tom hopes that he the pair will complete he also hopes it will be in style especially as Dry Old Party, a former racehorse by Un Desperado (the same sire as three times gold cup winner Best Mate) enjoys galloping and jumping. "Hopefully we will do the best dressage we are capable of and have a good ride round. Dry Old Party being a former racehorse is a real jumping machine."

50TH ANNIVERSARY EVENT UNDERWAY

The 2011 Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials, the 50th Anniversary of the event, started at 4.00pm with the first horse inspection in the main arena. Eighty three (81) combinations came in front of the ground jury of; Angela Tucker (GBR) President, Michel Asseray (FRA) and Christina Klingspor (SWE). Albeit four horses were held over for re-inspection all passed and are now in contention for the Land Rover perpetual challenge trophy and the £50,000 first prize. American rider Juliam Stiler won the first award of the event winning the prize for the 'best turned out' rider which was judged by Sarah Jewson, wife of the Burghley committee chairman Richard Jewson. Nine former winners are among the entries for this year's 50th anniversary competition including last year's winners Caroline Powell (NZL) and Lenamore, however as yet no-horse has managed to win Burghley in consecutive years and only one horse - Priceless and Ginnie Elliott (nee Holgate) has ever won twice in 1983 and '85. Lenamore is one of two eighteen year old horses here this year. The other is Comanche the ride of James Robinson (GBR). The pair is making what must be a record ninth appearance on the Burghley start list. William Fox-Pitt and Mark Todd (NZL) have both won Burghley on five previous occasions and a win this year for either rider would therefore give them a record sixth victory. Lucinda Fredericks (AUS) is only the second rider beside Captain Mark Phillips, now the Burghley course designer, to have won the event with a mare. This year Lucinda returns with the German-bred Prada, also a mare and one of 11 mares that passed the inspection this evening. Mary King, well recovered from her fall at Luhmuhlen last week also rides a mare, her homebred Kings Temptress, by Primitive Rising and one of three on the start list by this Thoroughbred sire. Mary also has the experienced Burghley horse Apache Sauce to help in her bid for her second Burghley title. Mary is also one of nine riders with two horses. As well as Mary other former winners with two rides are; William Fox-Pitt, Oliver Townend, Andrew Nicholson (NZL), Pippa Funnell, and Caroline Powell while Burghley 'first-timer Johnathan Paget (NZL) also has two rides as does British rider Francis Whittington. Former local girl and Fitzwilliam Pony Club member Sarah Cohen (nee Cutteridge) and the Preci-Spark homebred gelding Treason will be the first in the dressage arena tomorrow morning as the 'Guinea Pig combination for the Ground Jury. The first competitive rider will be Sam Griffiths (AUS) and Happy Times (no. 2) who will come before the ground jury at 09.30am.

THE LAND ROVER BURGHLEY HORSE TRIALS CELEBRATES THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY IN STYLE

To mark the occasion of The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials 50th Anniversary, course designer Captain Mark Phillips has planned a completely new-look cross-country course. A trip down memory lane provides the inspiration for this year's course, influenced by some famous fences from the past. Former signature fences such as Lambert's Sofa and Cottesmore Leap have been reinstated while new ones have been designed, including The Marquess of Exeter's Hurdles, a tribute to the 6th Marquess of Exeter, who introduced the event to Burghley. A brand new water complex has also been created. "I have gone retro," said Captain Phillips. "The course, which will also be longer in distance, is not as technical as modern courses and the fences have been made of smaller timber which makes it look impressive. In terms of the modern sport it will be very different - it will be a big old-fashioned Burghley for a bold galloping horse." A record number of entries have been received for this year's event attracting nine former winners including; Mary King, William Fox-Pitt, Pippa Funnell and Oliver Townend and from overseas, New Zealanders Mark Todd, Andrew Nicholson, Blyth Tait and last year's winner Caroline Powell. Together with British born Australian Lucinda Fredericks they head a field of over 80 competitors vying for this year's Land Rover Perpetual Challenge Trophy and the £50,000 first prize. British team riders Mary King and William Fox-Pitt spearhead the British threat. Mary who currently leads the HSBC FEI Classics™ series brings her Kentucky four-star winner Kings Temptress as well as Apache Sauce. William has a strong choice of six entries - albeit only two will be able to start - if he chooses to run Cool Mountain, a team gold and individual silver winner at last year's World Equestrian Games (WEG), this could be the one to give William a record sixth Burghley victory. There is a large overseas contingent as many riders have come over to prepare their horses ahead of next year's London 2012 Olympic Games. Wiltshire based New Zealand team veteran Andrew Nicholson will be one of the international favourites and Nereo with whom he won team and individual bronze at last year's World Equestrian Games could give Andrew a third Burghley title. They will face strong opposition from fellow countrymen and team mates Jonathan Paget (Clifton Promise & Clifton Lush) and Clarke Johnstone (Incognito III & Kolora Stud Secrets) both competing here for the first time. Kiwi eventing legend and double Olympic gold medallist Mark Todd (Major Milestone) could also climb up the leader board after cross-country. Last year's winner Caroline Powell returns with her winning ride the evergreen 19-year-old Lenamore, while Blyth Tait, the winner here in 1998 & 2001 is making a comeback to four-star competition. American Sinead Halpin (Manoir de Carneville) and Boyd Martin (Neville Bardos), first timers at the event could spring a surprise - it is 18 years since an American rider last won here. Others to watch are newcomers to the event Christopher Burton (HP Leilani & Newsprint) and Hamish Cargill (Sandhills Tiger) from Australia. Former French World Champion Jean Teulere (Matelot du Grand Val) at 56 one of the older riders, will be worth keeping an eye on while at the other end of the age scale is Burghley debutant former Pony, Junior and Young Rider team member and gold medallist, Wiltshire based Tom McEwen. At 20-years-old Tom will be the youngest competitor this year. "The number of entries from those hoping to compete this year was overwhelming - and the largest we have ever received," said Burghley Director Elizabeth Inman. "The result is a high-class field of competitors with many new names from New Zealand, America and Australia on the list. This combined with the new-look anniversary course will make for an exceptionally exciting competition." Away from the competition over 600 trade stands, six specialist pavilions and the Burghley food walk offer an unrivalled opportunity for shopping in one of the most magnificent locations in the country. "This year will be a unique occasion and with a record entry and a completely new look cross-country challenge the 50th Anniversary Burghley has all the promise of an exciting and memorable event," said Burghley Director Elizabeth Inman.
Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal will be attending The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials on Sunday 4 September 2011 and will present the prizes to the winners of this year's competition. This year is the 50th Anniversary of the horse trials and the attendance of Her Royal Highness will enable the event to mark the celebrations in a very special way. In 1971, aged 21, the Princess won the individual European Championship title at Burghley with Doublet and subsequently was voted the BBC's Sports Personality of 1971. In 1975 Princess Anne won European team and individual silver and the following year was a member of the British team at the Olympic Games in Montreal. HRH The Princess Royal will be one of many former winners returning to Burghley this year to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the event that was initiated in 1961 by the 6th Marquess of Exeter and has been held every year since.

BURGHLEY BURSARY TO HELP FIGHT STRANGLES

The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials is to award a £15,000 bursary to the Animal Health Trust (AHT). The bursary to the Newmarket based veterinary charity will be used to help fund the development of a rapid result blood test to identify horses infected with Strangles. The AHT has already developed a test that can detect the disease, however the result is not known for 48 hours. The aim of the new research is to develop the test to produce a result within 10 minutes. The test, which is being developed in conjunction with Forsite Diagnostics Ltd, will be a useful tool for disease screening at sales and competitions. "As an independent charity we receive no government funding and this bursary is extremely important to us and we are delighted to be working in partnership with The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials on this specific project," said Dr Richard Newton of the AHT who is carrying out the research in partnership with Professor Andrew Waller. "Without this vital funding to carry out the painstaking work that will give us the confidence to launch the test, it will remain no more than a theoretical possibility." The Bursary will be presented at this year's Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials (1- 4 September 2011) - in recognition of the 50th Anniversary of the event. "With increasing horse movement, not only world-wide but closer to home between competitions and livery yards, preventing the spread of disease is an increasingly important challenge facing the horse world," said Elizabeth Inman Director of the Trials. "We are delighted to be able to play a part in this challenge and hope that this anniversary bursary will help to fast-track this new test out of the laboratory and into the field and thereby help reduce the spread of what is a horrible disease for horses and owners."

HSBC AGREES FURTHER THREE-YEAR TERM FOR FEI CLASSICS

HSBC has agreed a further three-year term as global sponsor of FEI Eventing to include title sponsorships of the HSBC FEI Classics™ until the end of 2013 and the HSBC FEI European Eventing Championships™ in both 2011 and 2013. HSBC has supported the FEI Classics™ series since 2008 and will be contributing US$ 1 million in prize money over the next three years, which represents the biggest prize pot on offer in Eventing on an annual basis. Commenting on the renewal Giles Morgan, HSBC Group Head of Sponsorship, said: "HSBC has been a proud sponsor of the HSBC FEI Classics™ since its inception in 2008, as well as the HSBC FEI European Eventing Championships, and the bank is delighted to be continuing its support of these prestigious international events. As part of every sports sponsorship HSBC undertakes there is a commitment by the bank to invest in the grassroots level of the sport and over the coming years HSBC will be working closely with the FEI to help continue the growth and development of Eventing around the world." "We are delighted that HSBC, one of the FEI's Platinum Partners, will be continuing its sponsorship of our flagship Eventing series, the HSBC FEI Classics", FEI Secretary General Alex McLin commented. "The partnership of a global brand like HSBC and a series like the Classics is a perfect fit and HSBC's continuing support of the FEI European Championships confirms them as the global sponsor of Eventing." The HSBC FEI Classics™ 2011 will once again run on a points system, with the leading riders at each event gaining points towards the overall standings. The series prizefund will be divided between the five riders at the top of the standings at the end of the season: 1st - US$ 150,000 (Series Champion) 2nd - US$ 75,000 3rd - US$ 50,000 4th - US$ 33,000 5th - US$ 25,000 "HSBC's commitment to Eventing also extends to the HSBC FEI European Eventing Championships in 2011 and 2013, offering HSBC an excellent opportunity to engage with our customers and staff in key markets across Europe", Giles Morgan said. The FEI World Cup™ Eventing series, which is not included in the HSBC renewal agreement, remains one of the FEI's key series and will continue to run under the same format as last year.
