The Puckeridge all-girl team consisting of twin sisters Chloe and Daisy De Uphaugh, Alice Shickell and Sophie Byford, had just one rail throughout their eight rounds, but produced four clears in the final jump off – the only club to do so.
It was left to Puckeridge anchorman Sophie Byford (pictured) to decide whether the team would carry home the Challenge Trophy presented by “The Field”.
Sophie and ‘Tonto’ produced a foot-perfect clear round to great cheers from their supporters.
“It was a very nerve-wracking wait before my round and we nearly didn’t make it today due to a blow out on the way here, so the four-hour drive is now totally worth it,” said Sophie who is also taking part in Pony Eventing Trials and was second in Haras Du Pin recently.
The team also did themselves proud by winning the tack and turnout, receiving the Harewood Trophy for their efforts.
“This is a rather special moment for me, as it is my last year as DC,” said the team’s DC Di Potter.
Second place went to The South Norfolk (third here last year) who finished on four faults but produced a faster total jump off time to stay ahead of the Woodland Pytchley, who also finished on four faults.
“This is a very big second for us,” said assistant DC Sue Crawford. “It was a really close competition, terrifying to watch. I am really proud and pleased of the team who are all a credit to the club, especially as we only have 50 members.”
