Jack The Giant won the coveted SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse show class for the second time in three years in the main ring of the the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials.
Judges Jane Hubbard (ride) and The Hon. Hopper Cavendish (conformation) selected the Jackpots syndicate’s 14-year-old gelding by Giants Causeway, ridden by Allister Hood, for the top spot.
“It was a really fun class to judge,” said Jane Hubbard. “The winner was a wonderful stamp of horse and he gave me a fantastic ride.
Jack The Giant, who won here in 2014, was trained by Barry Hills for Flat racing and then by Nicky Henderson under National Hunt rules. He ran 26 times gaining nine wins and four seconds, and his total prize-money amounted to £223,055.
The Jackpots syndicate is made up of seven ladies who have known each other since their Pony club days.
“He’s quite a character with a lot of personality,” they said. “[The final at] HOYS will probably be his swansong as he’s given us everything in the last three years.”
Second place went to Barbers Shop ridden by Katie Jerram for Her Majesty the Queen. Trained by Nicky Henderson, the 14-year-old ran a total of 24 times in National Hunt Flat races, hurdles and over fences and was only out of the top nine on three occasions.
Third place went to one of the youngest horses in the field; the eight-year-old Wild West, owned and ridden by Lizzie Harris. The gelding, by Galileo, was trained by Jonjo O’Neill and ran in seven races, clocking up two seconds and two thirds with AP McCoy.
He was given to Lizzie three years ago and together they have competed in showing, team chasing, hunting and side-saddle.
