Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse Five Year Old Final

A fitting win for Ireland

It was a win for Ireland in the Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse five-year-old final. Wexford-based Tracy Walshe claimed top spot with Poynsetown Stonehaven, owned by Michelle Kenny and Rafael Sanctuary of River Lodge Equestrian, recently established in East Sussex.

Poynstown Stonehaven was bought at the Go For Gold sale last year and qualified in England at Richmond Equestrian Centre.

“This is a really good shop window and flagship for our horses that are produced by Tracy,” said Rafael. “It’s good to have a horse in the final, it’s a real pinnacle to aim for. Everyone wants to be here.”

He is by the Irish-based Westphalian showjumper KEC Maximum Joe and, taking after his sire, gained high marks in the jumping phase judged by Matthew Lanni and Gary Parsonage. It was, however, New Zealand international event rider Blyth Tait who had the final say in the standings, riding the top four after the gallop to determine the winners.

“You just get a feel for whether the horses have the scope to go on,” said Blyth. “All four at the top end were lovely horses and anyone would be delighted to have any one of them.”

Four-star eventer Heidi Woodhead took second place with Harieko DHI, a jumping bred bay gelding by the famous Contendro out of an Indoctro mare while Vicky Brake took third with her own good-looking Coolparks Sarco, another by the popular Shannondale Sarco.

Emilie Chandler went home with a fistful of rosettes for her own fourth-placed Hazzle Dazzle, the highest placed British-bred horse and also the SHG (GB) rosette for a horse by one of their approved stallions, the grand prix jumper Billy Congo. Bred by neighbour Nicola Trigg, Hazzle Dazzle was acquired as a yearling after Emilie spotted him in the field.

“I’d like to think I can keep him and come back here one day, he is a lovely lovely horse.”

Oliver Townend rode Miss Cooley, a daughter of the British-based Ramiro B, to fifth place to gain the award for the highest placed mare.
