Loud cheers greeted local rider Kate Walls as she and Alter Ego came over the last to complete the cross country course at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials.

Kate who has her own competition and rehabilitation yard literally just up the road from the park is making her debut at her most local event. “I remember watching my heroines Ginny Holgate and Lucinda Green when I was young so to be here now is amazing,” said Kate.

The combination completed the course clear but with 64 time penalties albeit the fact that Alter Ego is competing at all is nothing short of a miracle after a fall at Luhmuhlen left him with a fracture in his back. “To be standing here now is a dream come true – I am over the moon,” said Kate. “I had always intended taking long routes – but even so it all came up a lot faster than I thought and before I knew it I was through the finish.”

Kate acquired Alter Ego locally and kept him after he failed a vetting to be sold on. “He has been rather high maintenance since the fall but we made it and it was all worth it.”

Kate has worked full-time with horses for just three years. “I didn’t get my first horse until I was 21 after university but they were only part-time while I worked.” Being made redundant, after a 10 year career in corporate dentistry, gave Kate the opportunity to start her own yard.
