Caroline Powell

The reigning Burghley champion, Caroline took on the ride on Lexi Jackson’s diminutive grey Lenamore when his owner, who produced him to advanced level, moved to London.

Caroline arrived in Scotland from New Zealand in 1992 to work in a point to point yard. She raced five times before ‘retiring’. While there she took over the ride on her employer, Clive Storey’s, three-star horse Caliber, finishing 12th in her first three-day at Bramham. She then worked for former Badminton winner Ian Stark, grooming for him in Atlanta in 1996. She married Richard Powell the same year and moved to the outskirts of Kelso, where Richard manages a holiday park as well as breeding sheep and horses. The first of Jenny’s four-star horses was Jenny Leggae’s Cocky Olly Bird, with whom she completed her first four-star at Burghley in 1999. She had her first Badminton ride a year later with Dalliance, who was previously ridden by Lucinda Fredericks. She also had Burghley success with Lady Howick’s mare, Softly Softly, whose offspring Caroline will compete.

Caroline, who is an accredited BE trainer, teamed up with Lenamore in 2004 and was selected for the NZ team at 2006 WEG and the 2008 Olympic Games.
