Great BritainAndrew James

Country: Great Britain

Age: 32

Andrew is a professional rider & trainer based at Old Warden in Bedfordshire.

Andrew was born into a farming family on the west coast of Wales. He was given his first pony, a Shetland, when he was just two years old and was hunting by the age of seven. He became interested in eventing through the Pony Club and Tetrathlon.

Aged 22 he completed his first CCI3* at Blair Castle International Horse Trials on his own two horses.

In 2005 Andrew moved to Newbury and had a hectic season with over one hundred rides as well as selling, teaching, breaking and competing. The opportunity to base himself with Gill Watson for a year allowed him to concentrate on his best six horses. Following this Andrew was then based with Nick Turner before setting up on his own. In 2011 Andrew competed at his first Burghley with Cadoc Z who was subsequently sold and last year was competed by Takeaki Tsuchiya of Japan.

Andrew and his wife Rachel have a yard on the ‘idyllic’ Old Warden Park estate.

Loch Sunart, owned by the rider, was bred for the track. He is by the Thoroughbred North Col out of a mare by Country Retreat and was acquired from Malvern sales as a four-year old.
