Cross Country Walks

INFORMATION FOR ORGANISERS OF COURSE WALKS

Burghley has invested very heavily in sophisticated irrigation equipment to ensure competitors the best possible “going” on a cross country track that is fenced all year round and receives first class ground management from Philip Herbert our Clerk of the Course.  This policy has been rewarded and riders travel their horses from all over the world to compete at Burghley.

Over recent years, the number of people wishing to take course walks continues to increase  - some to earn the promoter a fee, some to promote a sponsor, others on a casual basis.  The ground compaction caused by so many pairs of feet causes long-term damage to the sward, reducing the effectiveness of the irrigation, which is so essential in providing the good going we are aiming to produce.

Several years ago we made a decision that the track to be used by horses will be opened to the competitors and their trainers only.  We are happy for the ‘Leader’ of course walks to walk on the cross country track, but request that they instruct their party to remain outside the track.

If you wish to organise course walks in 2010 please contact Lindsey Preston at the Burghley Horse Trials office either via email lindsey@burghley-horse.co.uk or tel: 01780 752131, to confirm arrangements: date, approximate time, anticipated numbers etc.  As in previous years, if you are charging for your course walk, we will again request a contribution of a minimum of 15% of your total takings, which will be donated to The Bill Thomson Bursary. Cheques made payable to Bill Thomson Bursary should be sent no later than 8 October 2010 to:

Thank you in advance for your co-operation and contribution to this worthwhile charity which facilitates the education of cross country design and course builders..
